- The first step is usually to run Degree Navigator to check
your
courses and requirements. You should print out the results and
bring them to your advisor if you wish personal help. Go to: http://dnadvisor.rutgers.edu/.
- Our CJ advising page for students with some pointers: http://sociology.camden.rutgers.edu/advising-cj.htm
- CJ major requirements: http://sociology.camden.rutgers.edu/major.htm#cjmaj
- Sociology
and double
major requirements can be found further along on the same
page. For a double major, use the Double Major Work Sheet at http://sociology.camden.rutgers.edu/Double_major_Form.pdf
- Degree Navigator is a help, but it is not definitive and often
makesw mistakes with transfer courses even from othe Rutgers
campuses. The definitive source is the Rutgers
transcript. To see actual transcripts): https://www.acs.rutgers.edu/admgrades
- Another useful too is Artsys (to look up transfer courses on
occasion): https://www.njtransfer.org/artweb/chgri.cgi
- Information about course availability can be found through the
Registrar's Office at http://registrar.rutgers.edu/CMINDEX.HTM.
Open "class schedule" and "online schedule" for the latest
information.
- To actually add courses, click on Registration-WebReg. It
is best to enroll as early in possible in order to hold a place,
otherwise a course may fill. You can easily drop through the
first week.
- If a course is filled, you can try getting a "special permission
number" from the Department Secretary or from the instructor
For those of you who are graduating in May, please remember that t
he
deadline for
filing for a May 2008 degree is Friday,
February 15. A diploma
application accompanied by a Degree Navigator report (general and major
requirements) which has been signed by a faculty advisor must be
submitted to
the Office of Academic Advising. Approved
minor forms
are also turned in with the diploma application. The Senior web
page http://www.camden.rutgers.edu/seniors
has additional information.
If you do not know who your advisor is, a list is available on our
homepage: http://sociology.camden.rutgers.edu/index.html
If
for some reason you are unable to print out the Degree Navigator
report, you may utilize the curriculum worksheets we used before DN was
implemented. You must fill them in before you
go to see your advisor for senior review. Bring in worksheets for
both
your general education and major requirements. Worksheets are
available in our office, the dean's office on the second floor of
Armitage or on-line at http://www.camden.rutgers.edu/RUCAM/studentaffairs/studserv_checklist.html
If you are a double major in
CJ and Soc, you should definitely use the worksheet, not Degree
Navigator, and fill it out
before you come in for your senior review. A link to it is
available
here: http://sociology.camden.rutgers.edu/doublemaj.htm.
You
can bring in the Degree Navigator report for your general education
requirements.
Effective with the 2008-09 academic year, the department
is changing
the requirements for the major in criminal justice. Please read the
following carefully.
All new students entering Rutgers during the current academic
year or current students who declare CJ as a major during 2008-09 or
later will
be
governed by these new requirements. Students who began their
degree
program before this year can elect to follow the new program as
well.
If you wish to do so, you MUST contact me - not your adviser - so that
I can officially make the change in your Degree Navigator record.
If
you
do opt for this, you should inform your adviser when you meet with him
or her. You can contact me after mid-August, when the Degree
Navigator
system should be ready for these changes.
If you have already completed the requirements under the old system
or
do not wish to switch, you need do nothing at this point. Your
Degree
Navigator record will continue to reflect the requirements
previously
in effect.
The differences between the old and new curricular requirements are as
follows:
- Instead of needing 42 credits to complete the major, the new
requirements call for 36 credits.
- The following courses are no longer required:
- 920:207 - Introduction to Sociology
- A 3-credit course in multicultural or non-western courses from
among the offerings in anthropology and sociology, and political
science
- A 3-credit course from the offerings of philosophy, political
science, social work, or urban studies
- 15 credits of approved crime or criminal justice-related
electives from the offerings of criminal justice or sociology are now
required. The old requirement was 12 credits.
- Students have been required to take either Race and Ethnicity
(920:316) or Social Stratification (920:332). A third option has
been
added: students can now satisfy this requirement by taking The Poor,
Minorities and Justice (202:337). If 202:337 is used to satisfy
this
requirement, it cannot also be counted towards the 15 credits of CJ
electives
Please note that this change does not affect the total number of
credits required for graduation, which remains at 120. Also, all
other
requirements for the CJ major remain the same.
You will find complete information on the new requirements on our
website at:
http://sociology.camden.rutgers.edu/major.htm.
There is also a link there to a new criminal justice major
worksheet.
For those double majoring in CJ and sociology, a new double major
worksheet will be available soon.
I hope that this is clear, but if you have questions about the new
requirements, please contact me. If you would like advice about
whether to switch, please contact your adviser. If you do not
know who
your adviser is, please check the list of assigned advisers available
on our homepage:
http://sociology.camden.rutgers.edu/
If you have not been assigned an adviser, please contact Sherry
Pisacano, our department secretary, who will assign one for you:
pisacano@camden.rutgers.edu
or 225-6470.
