| This is vogue 7799, made of a fuzzy
knit from Byrne's Fabrics in Philadelphia. My friend Catherine turned me on to this
top. Comfortable and warm for the winter! |
 |
This is the Bell Sleeve Wrap top,
number 1219, from Christine Jonson. I used a cotton knit from Emma One Sock. |
 |
| This is Vogue 7970, of a
"Super 120's" wool obtained from Michael's Fabrics. The drape of that
wool is luscious in this design. |
|
This is McCalls 4037. The
pattern calls for a woven fabric cut on the bias, but I used a knit, and was therefore
able to cut the fabric on the straight of grain, as the necessary drape of the fabric
resulted. |

This is my adaptation of
The Fashion Sewing Group (Nancy Erickson's) skirt, view B. The design is inspired
by a skirt I saw for sale at the retailer, "Anthropologie". The back
panels are left just as Nancy drafted the pattern.
I made my changes only to the front
pattern pieces. First, I merged the two pieces. I then got 'creative',
testing out different shapes. I ended up with what I thought was a pleasing shape to
the pieces. I incorporated the two top darts into the design of the left top
and right top patch pieces. I sewed some of the seams right side together and left
the raw edges showing. I also left the hem raw. I topstitched all other seams
(except the side seams for ease in alteration later, if I so desire). I used
grosgrain to face the waist, and lined the skirt with smooth rayon lining. |
|
| This is Top 123 from the May,
2004 Burda World of Fashion Magazine. |
 |
These are linen, and are my
adaptation of pattern number 104 from the 2/2003 issue of "Burda World of
Fashion".
I simply finished the side edges with hem, and
attached fabric ties to the edges. This is a totally covered up look, but adds a bit
of excitement to a relatively simple design.
The waistband is elastic, with a drawstring
insert. |
 |
| This is Vogue 7793.
It's made of rayon crepe. Completed in June 2004.
I created hand rolled hems using silk thread, so
that I would not lose the drape of the fabric at the hem with a wider hem.
I added a waist stay of grosgrain ribbon.
I used an invisible zipper in the back, with a
hook at the top neck edge. |
 |
This is Christine Jonson's "Ruffle Top and
Swirl Skirt", made of rayon/lycra from Jomar. This fabric cost only $1.50 per
yard, and this is my 'wearable muslin'.
The skirt is similar to Kwik Sew 3032, but the
difference is that where the body of the skirt joins the ruffle, there is a curve at the
side seams. The skirt has an elegant look when the wearer is walking. |
 |
| This is Vogue 7847. I used black
linen from Michael's. |
 |
Christine Jonson's Inset
Jacket. The jacket moves nicely with the body, and is thus not as 'enlarging'
in real life as it looks in a still photo. |
 |
| Christine Jonson's Swing Jacket, in
a purple eyelash from Emma One Sock. |
 |
Jalie 2005, lengthened into a dress. |
 |
| Jalie 2319, "Zippered Sweater and
Hoodie". This is made from a stretch velvet, cut with the nap facing up for
more depth of color. |
 |
This T-shirt pattern, Jalie 2005,
is the first Jalie pattern I made. |
 |
| This is Vogue 9766,which is out of
print. This is a mock wrap dress. I stabilized the inside top edge of the
neckline with strips of silk lining. |
 |
This is a skirt of my own
design. It's an 'onionskin' knit from Emma One Sock. The skirt has two
layers. The hem is serged in a matching thread. Simple! Wearing notes - even though the skirt has two layers, I
wear a flesh colored slip underneath, to avoid see-through |
 |
| This is a Marfy Italy shirt, with a
skirt of my own design. The skirt is underlined with nylon tricot. The fabric
was obtained on e-bay a few years ago, during my e-bay 'acquisition' stage. |
 |
Christine Johnson's wrap top in a
crushed velvet from Emma One Sock. Completed November, 2002. |
 |
| These trousers are number 104
from the 2/2003 issue of "Burda World of Fashion".
I These pants are 'no iron' casual.
In fact, I took them out of the dryer, and twisted them like crazy, so that they became
even more crinkled. I plan to wear them at the beach. Completed April 2003. |
 |
This is a Marfy Italy shirt - from their
Autumn/Winter 2000 collection, shown with a simple A line skirt of my own design.
The fabric is a stretch burnout velvet. |
 |
| Linen blouse, embroidered with
cotton thread. This blouse was created especially as a donation to the APPL
(Association of Partners for Public Lands) silent auction.
My niece, Christine, has a similar blouse of
green linen, made for her 20th birthday. |
 |
This shirt is Kwik Sew 3032 view B. The fabric
is a fine wool knit, finished at the hems with 3 thread serger lettucing. The body
of the fabric consists of a double layer as it is quite sheer. The fabric came
from a bundle I purchased in July 2002 from Michael's Fabrics. |
 |
| Wool jacket and skirt using fabric,
buttons, and lining from The Souder Store, Souderton, Pennsylvania. Completed
November, 2002. |
 |
This silk crepe halter dress is
pattern 111, from the July 2002 issue of Burda World of Fashion.
Completed August 2002 |
 |
| These pants are made of denim, and
the pattern is from the Burda World of Fashion, issue 1/2002. The top is rayon
knit, and is an adaptation of Nancy Erickson's 1960 as described in one of her
newsletters. |
 |
This garment is view B from Kwik
Sew 3032. I found this a perfect project for a time when I didn't want to
commit to a more involved project. A perfect 'summer sewing' project!
Reference the aqua top on this page - the same pattern done differently. |
 |
| Top 112 from the May 2002 issue of
Burda World of Fashion, made from a Rayon/Lycra knit. |
 |
This
is Kwik Sew 2694 in Cotton Lycra. The fabric is nice and drapey with a good
recovery. The shirt turned out looser than I would have liked, but I didn't feel
like fooling with the fit; the next one I make will be a size smaller. |
 |
| Linen top from Vogue pattern 2545,
by Adri. In general, I followed the recommended construction directions, making some
minor modifications to seam construction. As for fitting, this garment is designed
to be very loose, however, I reduced it's circumference by one inch overall from the
armhole to the hem by reducing the side seams. Completed June, 2002. |
 |
This suit is from Burda
World of Fashion, 1/2002 issue. It is of a wool gabardine from Michael's
Fabrics. Completed September, 2002. |
 |
| This "hobo bag" is made
of denim and lined with some novelty tie silk obtained from Jomar. The hobo bag idea
is described in a book entitled "Sew a Beautiful Gift", by Claire Shaeffer,
published by Sterling in 1986. |
 |
This top is Kwik Sew 3066.
The next one will be lengthened 1/2 inch as the 'under bust' line on this one is not
'under' my bust!
The skirt is my own design, of a vintage nylon
tricot bought a few years ago on e-bay. I lined this skirt with a black tricot, and
at the hem, attached lace instead of a hem, negating the need for a slip |
 |
This
Christine Jonson skirt is wonderful. I also made a shorter version which is great
too. |
