The Unofficial Transformers Club and Convention Exclusive Data Sheet

This page attempts to consolidate all the data I've gathered on pricing and availability of convention and club exclusives over the past few years into one page.  There are still a few gaps, and I would greatly appreciate any information anyone is able to provide. Please send me an e-mail through the blog link.

Hyperlinks to sources are provided where possible, but many of my sources are simply not accessible online, and are thus referenced in notes.  In many cases, there are various factors that should be taken into account with regard to how an exclusive should be assessed, and these are noted, as well.  In an effort to keep this page comparatively simple and easy to navigate, I have placed notes within mouseover text that only becomes visible if you hover your cursor over the appropriate text.  Places where such notes are available are marked with an asterisk (*).

G2 Breakdown

Free to convention attendees*Source: Message in the BotCon 2009 forum of the Official Transformers Collectors Club by member "Star Saber" dated 6/9/09.

N/A

204 25 or so (based on attendance, assuming everyone got one)

BotCon 1995

Nightracer

$15/$25*$15 is one-day registration, $25 is for the weekend. All pre-registrants got the toy for "free," much like the Primus packages of the Fun Publications era.

6.0/10.0 (not accounting for the fact that pre-registration is what you're really paying for)

294 78 or so (I'm told that only pre-registrants got one--not walk-ins. The number 78 assumes all pre-registrants got just one, but that all did get one.)

BotCon 1996

Onyx Primal

$35*$35 is the cost of pre-registration. All pre-registrants got the toy for "free," much like the Primus packages of the Fun Publications era. 7.0 times (not accounting for the fact that pre-registration is what you're really paying for) 1700 1090 (based on about 400 in attendance at the convention, assuming everyone got one. 210 were specifically for dealers and VIPs, who I assume all received one.)

BotCon 1997

Packrat

$40 for 2-pack (includes comic) Perhaps 3.7 times, depending on value of comic. 600 30*A Private Message from Defensis Prime on the Allspark, dated May 18, 2008, informs me that the extra 30 Packrats produced (above the 570 Fractyls) were sold post-convention as Packrat-only box sets. These were actually the same boxes as with the two-pack (even included the comic), but Fractyl wasn't included.

Fractyl

570 0 (Uncertain, but attendence was high enough that they should have sold out)

BotCon 1998

Vice Grip

$8/$12*In the pre-Fun Publications era, many exclusives were sold such that the first toy could be purchased at a reduced price compared to the “regular” convention price for any extras. Source for these prices: Message in the BotCon 2009 forum of the Official Transformers Collectors Club by member "Star Saber" dated 6/9/09. However, I note that Star Saber calls these prices "pre-order" vs. "at the convention," which may not be the same thing as what I understand re: the usual "1st one at reduced price" model or ~$20 (discrepancy between sources) 1.6/2.4 (or 4.0) times (depending on source) 600 0

Antagony

~$50 (may not be exact price)*Source: Message in the BotCon 2009 forum of the Official Transformers Collectors Club by member "Star Saber" dated 6/9/09. Note that Star Sabre says this is the "pre-order" price, by which he may or may not mean the same thing as the "1st one at reduced price" model used in other pre-FP BotCons. 3.3 times 600 0

BotCon  Japan 1998

Barbearian/Grizzly-1

~$66.30(?)*See data for Double Punch below. Although it doesn't explicitly say Barbearian was the same price, the original toys from these molds were in the same wave and were the same retail price, so it seems reasonable that they would cost the same at the convention, as well. 4.4 times 600 *Note from Hooper X dated 2/19/2008 notes that Japanese dealers had "tons of them pretty much every year [for a time]... they actually handed out one of each to people in the hotel lobby at BC05 rather than carry them back to Japan." He also notes that one of these dealers was the person who organized BotCon Japan 1998, making it fairly certain that he was sitting on quite a few at the end of the convention.Unknown, but >0

Double Punch

~$66.30*Quote from ATT dated January 26, 1999: "Double Punch is a much better toy than Scorponok. His colors are much more pleasing to the eye than Scorponok's, making him almost worth the price of admission alone. But as with all Botcon Exclusives he has a hefty price. He was priced at 7800 yen at the show."

The International Currency Converter gives following conversion for 12/11/1998 (closest available figure to opening date of the convention: 12/12/1998):

1 US Dollar (USD) = 116.77 Japanese Yen (JPY)
1 Japanese Yen (JPY) = 0.0085 US Dollar (USD).

Thus 7800 yen is roughly $66.30
4.4 times 600 *Note from Hooper X dated 2/19/2008 notes that Japanese dealers had "tons of them pretty much every year [for a time]... they actually handed out one of each to people in the hotel lobby at BC05 rather than carry them back to Japan." 2.5 / 2.8 times 1200 0 (Uncertain, but attendance was high enough that they should have sold out.)

BotCon 2001

Tigatron

$41/45*In the pre-Fun Publications era, many exclusives were sold such that the first toy could be purchased at a reduced price compared to the “regular” convention price for any extras. (includes comic) Approximately 3.5 times, depending on value of comic (note that this mold was never previously available in the US) 1500 0 (especially uncertain, given the comparatively low numbers of pre-registrants, but if there were extras, there were probably not many)

Arcee

$54/$60*In the pre-Fun Publications era, many exclusives were sold such that the first toy could be purchased at a reduced price compared to the “regular” convention price for any extras.

3.6 / 4.0 times 1500 0 (especially uncertain, given the comparatively low numbers of pre-registrants, but if there were extras, there were probably not many)

3000 Definitely quite a few left over.

3.0 / 3.5 times

1500 Probably sold out.

Cyclonus

2.35 times / 2.6 times

1500 Probably sold out.

BotCon Europe MMII

Rook*According to a post on the Allspark, dated October 22, 2006, Rook was not ready in time for BotCon Europe MMII, but was distributed to pre-registrants after the convention.

~$7.81*Post on ATT says the toy was 5 pounds, and itself gives $7.81 as the then-current dollar equivalent. The Wayback Machine Archive for the web page referenced there, sadly, only leads to the Non-Attendee Pre-Registration Form now. Such non-attendees could get Rook and other souvenirs for $70, but besides being an inflated price for non-attendees, it's not just for the figure itself. On the other hand, because the Rook toy was not ready in time for the convention itself, attendees were also given a Tap-Out for each Rook ordered, so one could make a case that the cost of Rook was actually around $3.90!

Roughly retail price*This claim needs explanation. Original retail price of the keychains was roughly $7, but I consider this WAY overpriced. Also, if one takes into account that attendees ended up getting a Tap-Out for each Rook ordered (as evidenced in the ATT link here), folks who attended BotCon Europe MMII really got a bargain!

3000 *According to an Allspark Private Message from "The Phazer" dated November 1, 2006, pre-registrants could get up to 4 Rooks apiece. A later e-mail from The Phazer, dated April 25, 2007, suggested non-attendee package numbers could be as high as the "low hundreds." With only 240 pre-registrants, allowing up to 4 Rooks each and allowing for non-attendee packages, there would still be lots of Rooks left over.Apparently somewhere around 2000 left over.

$40 1.6 times*Note that electronics present in the retail version of this mold (Armada Megatron) are not present in Megazarak. <1400*This Pre-Registration form was found via the Wayback Machine on October 21, 2006, reflecting the form as it existed on May 29, 2004. It lists Megazarak as "LE 1400." An Allspark post from Glen Hallit himself suggests that both toys were produced at less than 1400 units, and that "Sentinel Maximus' numbers were less than Megazarak." *But to judge from the numbers of Megazarak available on the secondary market for fairly low prices, I'd say that there were quite a few left over.Uncertain

Sentinel Maximus*Sentinel Maximus was not ready in time for the OTFCC 2004 and was eventually shipped at Hasbro’s own cost to those who pre-purchased it, with labeling calling it a "club exclusive" and without reference to the convention. However, it is still considered a convention exclusive here, due to the convention being the means of purchase of the figure.

$45/$50*According to the OTFCC 2004 pre-registration form, $45 was for the first Sentinel Maximus to be purchased, but pre-registrants were given the option of a second Sentinel Maximus for $50. Note that the pre-registration form says that Sentinel Maximus was to come with a comic book, and so it is presumed that not all of this cost was originally intended to be for Sentinel Maximus, per se. However, the comic book, Wreckers #4, was never produced. 2.25 / 2.5 times*Note that electronics present in the retail version of this mold (Armada Overload) are not present in Sentinel Maximus.

In 2005, Fun Publications took over the organization of BotCon, and instituted several changes in how exclusives were sold. First and foremost, whereas registration for the convention itself had, for most of the previous years, been a separate charge from the costs of the exclusive toys, registration was now bundled together with a box set of 5 or more toys.   This should be kept in mind when considering the cost of these sets compared to the retail version.

Deathsaurus

$265 for set of 7 (for club members.  $50 more for non-members). Loose sets available for $140.*Because registration for the convention (with boxed set of toys) plus joining the Transformers club costs $10 less overall than the “non-members” price for registration with the boxed sets for most members, I do not list non-member prices. For boxed sets, it should be noted that the cost of attending the convention is included in the price. A purchase of a boxed set is required before a loose set may be purchased. Between this and the relative scarcity of loose sets, just going with loose set numbers is not a reliable measure of how the toys compare to their retail counterparts. 4.1 times (assuming all figures smaller than a deluxe count at the “basics” $7 price-point) / 2.2 times 1250 each of the first 7, sold in 800 box sets, and 450 bagged sets There were a number (believed to be several hundred) of boxed and bagged sets still available after the convention. 4.65 / 3.0 times Either 1500 or 1450 each of these, sold in 1100 (or 1050) box sets, and 400 bagged sets.*The number of box sets was given as 1050 at www.botcon.com on May 4, 2007. Also, an e-mail from Brian Savage was sent that evening, confirming the number 1050 and revealing the number of loose sets at 400. NOTE: This number represents an increase from the number of 200 loose sets originally printed on the BotCon 2007 brochure. However, all is not so tidy. When BotCon finally took place at the end of June, the certificate that comes with the box sets said that the number of such sets was 1100, and this number has been used in various (unofficial) places since. Attempts to clarify whether the number of box sets is, in fact, 1050 or 1100 have not met with definitive success, although I have come to believe that 1100 is the correct figure. The number of loose sets, 400, seems not to be in question. Box sets sold out by May 4, 2007

A post made on the TFW2005 boards, dated February 25, 2008, cites an e-mail from Angie at FP saying that the sets had sold out that day. This is the same date as the last two figures of the box set, Starscream and Razorclaw, were revealed at BotCon.com. The "SOLD OUT" announcement was not made official until February 28th, at which point Brian sent out an e-mail with this information to TCC members, and the announcement was posted at BotCon.com. The text of the e-mail contains this additional announcement: "If you have sent in a registration since February 14, we will be emailing or calling you to find out which package you want to switch to." This makes it seem possible the sets were sold out as early as the 14th. However, several people have indicated that they registered later than this date, and were charged or otherwise received confirmation for the boxed set, so this seems unlikely.

The store only lets you see up to 20 units in a cart, so there's no definitive word on how many more than 20 are left, but based on comments made toward the end of the convention, there can't be too many left over. An e-mail dated May 18th, 2009, said there were less than 60 sets left. Unofficially, I'd say that there were between 30-40 sets left when the convention ended on May 31st.

*Source: Announcement at BotCon.com on March 2, 2009. This is a mere 5 days after pre-registration opened up. The same announcement also said that non-attendee sets were also sold out. It was never suggested before this date that non-attendee sets were only available as a limited number, nor had it yet been suggested how many box sets were made, although an announcement at BotCon.com on March 3rd suggests that several hundred box sets remained available for attendees, who were now only allowed one set per attendee. Non-attendee wait lists were announced, however, in case box sets remained after the convention attendees got theirs. Since the sets didn't actually sell out by the end of the convention, it is believed that anyone who asked to be put on the non-attendee wait list was able to get a set.

This finally occurred on June 8th, 2009. The number is a guesstimate based on an announcement Brian Savage made over the loudspeaker about two hours before the convention ended, saying that there were 500 of these sets left.

The earliest announcement of these sets I can find is posted that day at 1:06 pm, PDT. As of 1:14 pm, PDT, there were 8 of these sets left in the club store. An eyewitness account at BotCon 2009 suggested that the club store was down to their last case of Banzai-Tron/Skyquake sets. A case contained 18 sets.
