I decided to have interchangeable control panels. The first one has two joysticks with six buttons each. The second one is going to have a spinner and trackball with six buttons (3 on the right and 3 on the left). My third panel will be a Star Wars yoke panel with a Turbo Sub yoke that I bought off of EBay. Turbo Sub was a game that Atari came up with that used a yoke identical to their Star Wars game. But Turbo Sub never made it to production. My yoke is off of a prototype and had been sitting in a warehouse since the mid-1980's until the guy I bought it from got it.
I got the idea for interchangeable control panels from Roswell 88201. I ordered all of the joysticks, buttons, and trackball from Happ Controls. They have everything you could possibly need for a project like this.
Joysticks: 2 Happ Super Joysticks (4 & 8 way switchable)
Buttons: 15 Ultimate Pushbuttons with Cherry microswitches

I used two barrier strips from a local electronics store (Mid-State Electronics) in the wiring of the controls, and wired each control's ground individually. This way if one control goes out, the rest will still function, and it will be easier to isolate where the problem is.

Trackball: 3 inch red translucent trackball from Happ Controls
It is really sharp when lit from underneath. See the completed trackball & spinner control panel below.

Spinner: Model 2 spinner from Oscar Controls. I highly recommend the Oscar spinners. I used to have a spinner from Happ Controls, but it just didn't feel right. The Oscar spinners have a MUCH smoother feel, and they are less than half the price of the Happ spinners.
