2010 Ohio AAU State Championship
May 1st
Franklin County Veterans Memorial
2009 Ohio Qualifier
The 2009 Ohio District Qualifier had record numbers, our final number of competitors
was 374. The tournament ran smoothly but a little behind schedule. Admittedly the staging times were aggressively
stacked to be sure competitors were in the venue when called. Everything would have to run perfect to stay on that schedule
and nothing is ever perfect.
A tournament of this size gives athletes more ring time and more experience. The level of competition is excellent. The Ohio tournament draws in some of the top
competitors in and around Ohio which includes some of the national team members. It also draws in many
beginners and first timers for a great experience for all. This is a wonderful tournament for the first
timers with pre-set staging times, announced division staging with a projection screen for those who couldn’t
hear the announcement. This tournament has attracted athletes from not just Ohio but all the surrounding states; Kentucky, Indiana, Michigan, West Virginia and Pennsylvania as well as others
such as; Illinois, Tennessee, Georgia, Maryland and Canada.
The Ohio tournament is located in a central, easy to find location in downtown Columbus, Ohio with easy access
from two major interstates, I-71 & I-70. Offering large 8x8 meter matted rings, the latest in Electronic Scoring
with on-site technical support and online registration and Macho as the onsite equipment supplier. The venue offers more than
ample elbow space for the spectators and warm up areas for the athletes. This tournament is set up and run in a professional
manner. The Ohio tournament brings in officials from all over the United States to provide fair competition for all. This
tournament strives for the most fair, organized and well-managed competition it can provide.
Unlike many local tournaments offered in Ohio this one brings you two (2) types of sparring to fit into the
different styles taught at many schools. The first type is
Point Style which
is a light contact sparring where the athlete wears head gear, foot and hand pads. A good technique delivered with good control
to the designated scoring area will score the point while a light contact kick to the head scores two points. The other type
is Olympic Style which offers full contact with the athlete
wearing protective gear. Junior safety rules are in place with light head contact for the youngsters. Since this tournament
offers the Point Style sparring and accepts many style of Forms (Poomse) there are Karate and Tangsoodo schools who also participate.
Competitors are not required to train in Taekwondo to compete at an AAU tournament but they should make themselves familiar
with the rules of the tournament. See www.aautaekwondo.org for the complete rule book and what Forms are accepted.
