Felice Lesser Dance
Theater reaches out to members of the NYC Dance/Theater communities who would
like to perform in FLDT’s premiere production of
FUNDING THE ARTS
The
Felice Lesser Dance Theater will be premiering Felice Lesser’s satire, FUNDING
THE ARTS, a spy spoof about the lack of funding for the arts in
this country, during the company’s Fall season at the Howard Gilman Theater of
the Baryshnikov Arts Center, May 12-16, 2010. The production will be
choreographed and directed by Lesser, and will feature a simultaneous “moving
set” of projected video/computer animation, with which the live performers will
appear to interact. In casting the work, FLDT is reaching out to members
of the dance and theater communities who might like to return to the stage to
perform in this production. In this time of financial turmoil, we’d like
to cast the work with choreographers, dancers, and former dancers who are known
to the NYC dance world, so that we can draw more attention to the lack of
funding for us all.
Funding the Arts’ plot concerns three
rogue ex-CIA agents (and their KGB counterparts, now bound in a common
venture), who overthrow governments around the world, rob their treasuries, and
use the booty to support their first love -- their ballet company. But
when they return to the U.S. in the post 9/11 world, they find they are totally
unprepared for the realities of running a non-profit arts organization.
Out of money, they look for a way to keep the company afloat, while trying to
save the world from their arch-enemy (not to mention saving dance as an art
form), while an apathetic public stays home and surfs the internet.
All performers must
be available for NYC rehearsals/performances from mid-March through May 16th
2010. Cast members must be able to both
act and dance (or move well -- in the cases of Henry, Boris, Natasha, Zelda,
and Brooke), and may be asked to do Voice Overs (spies, dance critics,
dancers), and/or double in small movement-based roles (spies, soldiers).
While our budget is very limited, all performers will be paid for rehearsals
and performances.
