Save Union Square Park

Stop the give away of public parkland to a private restaurant!

Despite an abundance of restaurants in the area, and the scarcity of park space,
the City is insisting that a permanent restaurant be built inside the park.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Our group was formed last October to oppose the City/Union Square Partnership/BID's costly renovation plan for the north end of Union Square Park. The plan would have taken away thousands of square feet of potential playground space to accommodate an exclusive year-round restaurant. With the help of community organizations, elected officials and a broad-based labor coalition, our campaign succeeded in defeating their irresponsible plan. However, the City is still intent on taking away space from children and the public. The BID and the City still plan to establish a seasonal restaurant in the Park's historic pavilion. It would operate from May through October-when the public's need for and use of park space is the greatest. Despite vehement community opposition, the City is ignoring the community's wishes.

CURRENT CAMPAIGN ISSUES

TAKE BACK UNION SQUARE PARK FOR CHILDREN AND THE PUBLIC!

The City's and the Business Improvement District's Restaurant Plan would:
  • Take away thousands of square feet of potential play and community space
  • Take away the historic park pavilion for six months for an exclusive private restaurant, thereby making park-users pay for access to this section of Union Square Park
  • Unnecessarily build a separate comfort station

A Better Plan for our Park and Playground Would:

  • Maximize desperately needed play and community space
  • Renovate the pavilion for a variety of year-round uses by children, families, college students, adults and community organizations, as well as for staging public rallies, concerts and other park events that serve the wider public
  • Use the entire area of the sunken terrace between the existing playgrounds to increase much-needed open space for children to run and play
  • Include play equipment for physically challenged children
  • Renovate the public restrooms in the pavilion for playground users
  • Allocate proper funding to adequately maintain and manage our park
