Lindy Tsai, Cello

Lindy Tsai, 16, has been studying cello for eleven years with Madeleine Golz at the JCC Thurnauer School of Music in Tenafly, New Jersey and the Manhattan School of Music Pre-college in Manhattan, New York, where she began attending in fall of 2006. 
  
At the Thurnauer School, Lindy was principal cellist of the Symphony Orchestra for two years. She was also selected to perform in the annual Handler Master Class Series with Irene Sharp, Bruce Adolphe, Timothy Eddy, Carter Brey, Rafael Figueroa, and Colin Carr. 
  
Currently at the Manhattan School of Music, Lindy is a member of the philharmonic orchestra under the baton of Maestro Jonathan Strasser. In November 2008, she was chosen to perform in a master class for cellist Steven Isserlis, and in December of 2008, she won the pre-college’s concerto competition for strings ages 16 and up. She performed Edward Elgar’s cello concerto in E minor, movements three and four, with MSM’s philharmonic orchestra in May of 2009.  
  
Since 2001, Lindy has attended several summer music camps including the Elizabeth Morrow School Summer String Festival, the JCC Thurnauer School Chamber Music Camp, the Kinhaven Music School, the Amati Music Festival, and Hotchkiss Summer Portals. In 2005, 2006, and 2008 at the Amati Music Festival, Lindy was selected to perform in the Honors Student Concert at Steinway Hall. Out of the 12 performers in the 2006 Honors Student Concert, Lindy’s performance was one of the four that was selected by Robert Sherman to be broadcasted on WQXR’s Young Artists Showcase in January of 2007. At AMF 2005, Lindy was selected to perform in a master class with Jian Wang, and in 2006 with Paul Tobias. This summer, she will be attending the ARIA International Music Academy. 
  
In November 2006, Lindy won the Junior A Division of the American String Teachers Association of New Jersey (ASTA/NJ) Solo Competition, and in 2008 she received honorable mention. In April 2007, Lindy won the Bergen Youth Orchestra (BYO) Young Artists Competition and as a result performed with the orchestra at Bergen County Academies in Hackensack, New Jersey. Lindy performed in Steinway Hall in 2006 and 2008 as part of the American Music Teachers League (AMTL) Scholarship Awards Competition. Based on her performances, she was awarded honorable mention for the Regina Rubinof Award in 2006, and won first place for same in 2008. Also in 2008, Lindy received the honor of being selected to perform Frederick Chopin’s Polonaise Brillante in Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall as part of the AMTL Young Musicians Concert. Since 2006 for 3 consecutive years, Lindy has auditioned for and was awarded scholarships from the Children’s Foundation for the Arts. As of early April 2009, Lindy was selected as a semi-finalist for the Queen’s Symphony Orchestra Young Soloist Competition. 
  
Lindy lives in Old Tappan, New Jersey, and is a sophomore at the Northern Valley Regional High School at Old Tappan where she is a member of the string ensemble and the Tri-M Music Honors Society.
