  Dolphins - Page 1 Page2

I took these images during an expedition on the USS Monitor off the coast of Hatteras, NC in 1999. We had placed our chase boat in the water and sent a couple of guys out to do some line work before we could dive for the day. A pod of North Atlantic Spotted Bottle Nose Dolphins came by to check out the action. They swam right up to the chase boat getting almost close enough to touch. They hung around for about 45 minutes before finally deciding to move on. We didn't mind the interruption to the days work.

Chase Boat

The dolphins come in to check out our chase boat and the work being done. One of the crew suggested that they were probably just bored and thought that we might be interesting.

Pod

The pod swims by of the main boat's port side. When I saw the first one I thought it might be a shark. As they got closer it was obvious that they were dolphins.

Back

We backed down on the chase boat so the dolphins came in to check us out.

Close

The dolphin didn't seem to mind that the screws were turning on the main boat and came in very close.

Spots

A nice close up of the back of one of the dolphins. No doubt in where they get their name.

Pairs

They buzzed about in groups of two or three swimming around the chase boat and the swim platform of the main boat. They were checking us out as much as we were checking them out.

Talk?

You wonder what they are thinking. These two are probably talking to each other saying 'what are these guys doing way out here?'

Turn

These two turn off after making a pass.

Air

After a quick breath of air they dart off to catch up with their buddies.

Buzz

This group buzzes past to swim over to the chase boat and check it out.

Wish

I was wishing that I could be in the water with them.

Platform

As an indication of how close they came in, that is the metal edge of the swim platform in the lower right of this image. I thought about 'falling' off the back of the boat to get some in-water shots.
