Manatees

I took my family to Crystal River, FL back in 1995 to 'hunt' the manatees. The Manatee are very social creatures and will come up to you and let you pet them if you are calm and don't thrash around. They like to have their skin scratched and will roll over and let you rub their bellies if you do a good job.

Pet

I reach out and pet this manatee. I'm using only skin diving gear because the bubbles from the SCUBA scare the manatee away.

"Hey Guys"

This baby manatee is feeling left out of all the attention and come over to see what is going on.

Better Side

This manatee puts his better side towards the camera for a nice profile shot.

Surface

The manatees spend a good deal of their time at the surface because they need to breath air. This makes them susceptible to strikes from boat propellers. One has to be very careful when operating a boat in a manatee area.

Mother and Calf

Here a mother and calf rest quietly in the water. The baby looks like he is pointing over to us.

Manatee

The manatees are actually closely related to the elephant. You can sort of see the resemblance in this shot.

Tarpon

OK, so this isn't a manatee. It is a tarpon. These prehistoric looking fish congregate to the same warm water springs during the winter months that the manatee do.
