Squid

During a night dive on the Oil Wreck a squid uses my dive light to hunt for food. The beam lights up particles of food that the squid likes to dine on. As I was starting a short deco, this squid zipped in and hunted in the beam of my light. He was nice enough to wait around long enough for me to get a few pictures of him. They suck water into a chamber inside their body. This chamber is lined with muscles and by contracting these muscles the squid is able to force the water out through a nozzle located just under its tentacles and jet off at a high rate of speed.

Squid

This squid zips in to check out a food particle illuminated by my dive light.

Reverse

The squid uses the small fins located at the top of his body to maneuver backwards in the water. I don't know if he knows he is getting in perfect camera range.

Hovering

The squid hovers perfectly mid water not seeming to mind that I'm filming him.

Camera Shy?

This squid is definitely not camera shy as he stays around for several minutes only a few inches from the lens of the camera.

Bait Ball

Ok, these aren't squid. They are bait fish. Just as we were finishing the last few minutes of deco we became swarmed with thousands of these bait fish. We were sitting in the center of a bait ball.

Bait

As the bait fish surged back and forth pelting into us, I began to wonder..."what was startling them?"
