The stern section of the USS Wilkes-Barre is arguably one of the best wreck dives in Florida. It has big guns, easy interesting penetration and its shear size is impressive. After a few misses that ended up as dives on the bow, I finally got to dive the stern section on July 29th, 2001. It was a fantastic dive. We hooked the wreck at the top of the superstructure that comes up to 140 feet or so. The sand is over 240 feet. The visibility was not spectacular and the current was moving pretty good but we managed to get seven divers to the wreck and back again without a problem. Where the ship is cut in two, you can look at a near perfect cross-section of the wreck.

The steel plate that made up the skin of this door has corroded away, but the cross braces remain.

A large jewfish approximately 6 to 7 feet long fins gently into the current on the main deck.

Radio

Radio Room

I believe that this is the radio room on the Wilkes. Several pieces of equipment are still in their place.

5-Inch Gun Turret

This 5-inch twin turret sits on the starboard side of the wreck.

6-inch

6-Inch Gun Turret

This is one of four main 6-inch triple gun turrets on the Wilkes. The two here on the rear deck actually overlap each other. The forward one sits a little higher than the one behind it.

Here is the business end of the gun. These big guns were used in shore bombardments and to sink enemy ships.

This is a shot from on top of the rear-most turret. A diver in the distance is returning from checking out the helicopter port on the extreme aft end on the ship.
