APOLOGETICS WITH MRS. H-G Apologetics is a required course for seniors. It is focused on with establishing and defending the reasonableness of the Catholic Faith. The purpose of this course will be to strengthen the faith by illustrating that the tenets of faith of the Catholic Church are in full harmony with reason as well as to provide students with the tools necessary to discuss their faith in a reasonable manner with both unbelievers and inquirers, as well as being able to refute the arguments and objections of those who reject the Catholic Faith. In the context of this course we will be looking at the following areas: the nature of apologetics, faith and reason, the nature of God, the problem of evil, God and grace, after life, Christianity and other religions. We will have a variety of assessments: journals, on-line discussions, projects, quizzes and tests. Journal and Homework: You are expected to turn in all assignments on time. Homework, online discussions and journals, other than projects, will be lowered 10% for each day that it is late. Projects are lowered 20% for each day that they are late. A zero is averaged in for all missing work. All assignments must be typed unless otherwise specified. All class work must be completed in blue or black ink. I do not accept work completed in pencil, red, orange, purple or green pen. I count off for errors in spelling and capitalization or papers that have been bent, folded or mutilated. Please check your work for spelling, grammar and punctuation and to see if what you have written actually makes sense. Please use dictionaries. I expected you to do your best and I pledge to do my best as well. Homework is posted in my classroom on the white dry erase board in the front of the classroom as well as on my website: www.mrshgsplace.com You may also access my website from the school website by clicking on my name in the list of religion teachers in the academics section of the school website. If you do not understand an assignment, please ask me to clarify! I do not bite! Advice is always free. I am available before and after school in my classroom, 103. You may also contact me through email, annehg@verizon.net or call me at 703-266-8805. You do not need a rabies shot to call me! Grading Scale: 25%: class participation 25%: journals , homework assignments and online discussions 25%: projects 25%: tests Please note, unless you are in the actual process of dying a painful death, all journals and other assignments must be turned in by the end of class or it is late. I do not waive late grades for any of the following reasons: “My dog ate my homework; my pet boa constrictor swallowed my book bag; I was kidnapped by aliens from outer space/reality TV casting agents/the Mafia/gypsies; I couldn’t remember the homework; I lost my book or notebook, etc. If you miss a class as a result of a tardy or early dismissal, you are required to turn in the assignment to me or have it date stamped in the front office and put in my mail box or it is late. There will be a test and quiz for each chapter and unit. Info from one chapter may find its way on to a later test. . All tests are strictly open brain. If you are absent, it is your responsibility to get notes from other students, If you are absent on the day before a test is given and no new material is given, you are expected to take the test with everyone else. All make up tests are essay- no exceptions. Class participation is worth 25% of your grade. Good attendance is essential. If you miss 6 or more classes in a quarter, you may be in danger of failing. Your grade in class participation will be lowered by 10%. If you are not present, you cannot be part of the class discussion. You are expected to take an active role in class. Just being a warm body occupying a desk does not earn you an A or a B in class participation! You need to ask questions, respond to questions and share your insights and views in a respectful manner. Slumped over a desk as though you are in the process of dying or taking a nap is both disrespectful and unsatisfactory. We will have a number of research projects and journals due each quarter. All written reports must be submitted to www.turnitin.com as well as a hard copy. I will not accept written reports by email. Any assignments that are accepted by email must be submitted by typing it directly into email. No attachments will be accepted. Final Exam: The final exam is worth 1/5 of the final semester grade. It is a written paper. Topics will be selected from a list given in class for all Apologetic students. A separate instruction paper will be given with specific requirements and the list of topics. Library research for this paper will be scheduled throughout the semester. Cheating: Any student who is caught cheating* will receive a zero for that work and will be written up. *(Cheating is defined as taking another’s knowledge or work without permission.) n.b. Any student who turns in the same assignment as another with font and text size changed is not doing his or her own original work. This is cheating. Please refer to the student handbook pp. 3, 36-37 for more information regarding the honor code and academic honesty. All students will be required to write out and sign the Honor Code pledge on all graded assignments. The pledge is found on page 3 of the handbook and states:“I have upheld the intent and principles of the Paul VI Academic Honor Code while completing this assignment.” All assignments turned in without the honor code and signature will receive an automatic zero. “Pride, Values, Integrity” may not be substituted. Each student is expect to take responsibility for his or her own actions, inactions, reactions and work. It is not your parents' job to take this class, live your life or make excuses. You are the one who is earning the grade, taking the class and living your own life. As a senior, you know the school rules. You make choices each day and you need to accept the consequences of those choices. If you do not understand an assignment, ask questions! Do not wait until an assignment is due. Students have talked to me and actually lived to tell the tale! Texts: Kreeft, Peter and Ronald K. Tacelli. Handbook of Christian Apologetics. Downers Grove: Intervarsity Press, 1994. Lewis, C. S.
