COMMUNITY SERVICE REQUIREMENT for SENIORS
Each senior is required to perform at least 5 hours of service per religion class per semester. For seniors, this service is required to be “direct” service. JUNIORS ARE REQUIRED TO COMPLETE 20 HOURS OF DIRECT SERVICE BY DECEMBER 3RD. “Direct Service” is service that is given directly to a marginal population: individuals who are mentally, emotionally or physically handicapped, the elderly, or homeless. Some examples of possible service include: · participating in an activity at the Northern Virginia Training Center · mentoring at Eddie’s Club · teaching handicapped swimming at a recreation center · tutoring homeless students at the Lamb Center, Tuesdays, Wednesday & Thursdays, 4:30 – 6:00PM · serving meals at a shelter kitchen or at SOME · being a peer mentor for the Options program at school (only seniors) For seniors, Community Service cannot begin before June 1st, 2008 and must be completed by December 1st, 2008. The same service hours classes if taking both in the same Service hour sheets must be dated and signed by the supervisor of the activity and a phone number for contacting the supervisor must also be provided. There is a required journal which must be turned into the student’s current religion teacher no later than December 3rd by 3:00 P.M.. The forms to be used for this semester can be replaced, if lost, in the office of the Campus Minister, Mrs. Kline or on the Campus Ministry website. Seniors in my religion classes will receive 50 points of extra credit for service hours turned in before November 1st, 2008. I will also give 25 points of extra credit for each hour of service over 5 hours for a maximum of 5 additional hours or 125 points that are completed and turned in by November 1st. Seniors who fail to complete the required service, or who turn it in late, or fail to turn in all required forms or do not have direct service will have their semester grade in religion lowered one full letter: A becomes a B, a B+ becomes a C+, a B becomes a C, a C+ or a C becomes a D, a D becomes an F All hours are subject to verification. There will be no exceptions made for the above rule. FORMS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED BY FAX.
