JUSTICE SERVICE WITH MRS. HG Welcome to Justice Service Class! This is a required course for juniors which focuses on specific issues in social justice. During this course we will examine the Gospel imperatives to care for our neighbors, Catholic teachings on social justice as well elements of a just world and specific issues such as poverty and homelessness, prejudice,racism, ecology, fair trade and the need for creating peace. During this course each student is required to complete twenty (20) hours of service is given directly to a member of a marginalize population: an individual who is physically, intellectually and emotionally disabled, economically disadvantaged or elderly. The service can not be started before the beginning of the semester and must be completed and the paperwork turned in by December 1st, 2009. Late service hours will not be accepted for any reason. Students will receive a separate packet with the specific dates and required forms. Please note: If a Student does not complete the service portion of the course and the required journal that accompanies it, he or she will fail Religion for the semester. The required community service hours are the final exam. The required textbook used for this course is: Stoutzenberger, Joseph. Justice and Peace, Our Faith in Action. Harcourt Religion Publishers, 2007, ISBN#0-15-901674-6 Daily Supplies. Students are required to bring the following materials daily to class: a 3 ring binder or notebook with 4 dividers, a blue or a black ink pen and a highlighter. Students may also be asked to bring in a Bible for classroom assignments from time to time. Class and Homework: You are expected to turn in all assignments on time. Homework, other than projects or the service journals, will be lowered 10% for each day that it is late. Projects are lowered 20% for each day that they are late. A zero is averaged in for all missing work. All assignments must be typed unless otherwise specified. All class work must be completed in blue or black ink. I do not accept work completed in pencil, red, orange, purple or green pen. I count off for errors in spelling and capitalization or papers that have been bent, folded or mutilated. Please check your work for spelling, grammar and punctuation and to see if what you have written actually makes sense. Please use dictionaries. I expected you to do your best and I pledge to do my best as well. Homework is posted in my classroom on the white dry erase board in the front of the classroom as well as on my website: www.mrshgsplace.com You may also access my website from the school website by clicking on my name in the list of religion teachers in the academics section of the school website. If you do not understand an assignment, please ask me to clarify! I do not bite! Advice is always free. I am available before and after school in my classroom, 103. Grading Scale: 10%: class participation 25%: class and homework 25%: projects 25%: tests 15%: quizzes Please note, unless you are in the actual process of dying a painful death, all homework must be turned in by the end of class or it is late. I do not waive Late grades for any of the following reasons: “My dog ate my homework; my pet boa constrictor swallowed my book bag; I was kidnapped by aliens from outer space/reality TV casting agents/the Mafia/gypsies; I couldn’t remember the homework; I lost my book or notebook, etc. If you miss a class as a result of a tardy or early dismissal, you are required to turn in the assignment to me or have it date stamped and put in my box or it is late. There will be a test and quiz for each chapter and unit. Info from one chapter may find its way on to a later test of quiz. All quizzes will be open notebook and open brain. All tests are strictly open brain. If you are absent, it is your responsibility to get notes from other students, If you are absent on the day before a test or quiz is given and no new material is given, you are expected to take the test or quiz with everyone else. All make up tests and quizzes are essay- no exceptions. We will have a number of research projects and journals due each quarter. All journals and written reports must be submitted to www.turnitin.com I will not accept written reports by email. Cheating: Any student who is caught cheating* will receive a zero for that work and will be written up. *(Cheating is defined as taking another’s knowledge or work without permission.) n.b. Any student who turns in the same assignment as another with font and text size changed is not doing his or her own original work. This is cheating. Please refer to the student handbook pp. 3, 36-37 for more information regarding the honor code and academic honesty.
All students will be required to write out and sign the Honor Code pledge on all graded assignments. The pledge is found on page 3 of the handbook and states: “I have upheld the intent and principles of the Paul VI Academic Honor Code while completing this assignment.” Until the interim due date of the first quarter students will have an opportunity to go back and add it to assignments turned in without it without grade penalty. The second half of the first quarter, students will lose 10%. The second quarter, all assignments turned in without the honor code and signature will receive an automatic zero. Important Dates:
10/5: First 10 Hours of Service are due with all required journals
11/20: Last date to turn in completed Service Project for Extra Credit (+10%)
12/1: All Service projects are to be completed and turned in; no late service projects will be accepted for any reason. Failure to turn in project is an automatic failure of the course. Missing required sections of the service log, even if hours are completed may result in an F on the exam and the course. |
