Entrepreneur

Richard A. Johnson

Entrepreneur means "the person who assumes the risk and management of business"

IN THE BEGINNING"Running a business of one's own appeals to the type of person who values independence, who takes a great interest in working hard, and who is willing to take risks."
So began a theme written by a 16-year old boy in his senior year at high school. In conclusion, he stated, "(The entrepreneur) must be willing to put money, plenty of hard work, and time into his business and take all risks that goes with it."
HALF A LIFETIMEForty-two years have passed since this young boy wrote that theme, and not much has changed to denigrate its relevancy in the intervening years. Although the theme was short, just four handwritten pages, the material is still applicable.
Included is the necessity for both education and experience to successfully run the business of the entrepreneur's choosing. Covered, too, are the complexity of running the business, the time that must be spent during the normal working days plus after hours in the evening and on weekends, and the desire to meet and help other people.
$ NOT WITHOUT MONEY! $Although discussed, rather short shrift was given to the required financial investment. A successful startup entrepreneur, whether providing a home-based service, a full-service retail store, a professional office or industrial enterprise, must have adequate working capital.
WHAT GOVERNMENT?Oddly, no mention was made of government regulations. Was this due to the naivete of a youth, or was the government so much less intrusive in 1956 that it was not thought worth mentioning? At the end of the Twentieth Century, government regulations are now at the top of the list of considerations.
The quote in the sub-headline was footnoted as "Vocations for Boys, Kiston, Harry D. and E.M. Stoves, page 128." This was probably one of the few resources available for someone wishing to become an entrepreneur nearly a half century ago.
RESOURCES GALOREToday, resources are plentiful with Internet sites such as Entrepreneur Magazine's Small Business Square with links to Tips, Entrepreneur Magazine Online and other related on-line magazine sites, Opportunity of the Week, and more. A trip to any library or local bookstore will provide many titles to assist the new entrepreneur.
For our Canadian friends, Royal Bank-Small Business and Entrepreneurs will prove helpful. The site is available in English and French. Stories from successful entrepreneurs who share their experiences, tips and help for startups are featured. Topics include finance, management, operations, sales and marketing.
NEVER GAVE UP!It took this boy a quarter of a century to begin realizing the youthful dream that he never gave up. He started his first business in 1981, and although the business has evolved and there have been some interruptions he is still an entrepreneur. I know because I was that boy.
IF YOU CAN DREAM IT YOU CAN DO IT If you have the dream, desire, determination, motivation and financial resources, go for it! You can do anything you truly put your mind to doing. Do not listen to the negative comments your friends and relatives are likely to make. Do listen to sound advice from truly informed individuals. You can do it!
