Cagarra or Cory's Shearwaters,
is a bird which migrates between north Africa and the Azores, especially Santa Maria, where it reproduces and lives from May
through October. The islander is therefore nicknamed "cagarro" (male) or "cagarra" (female). The bird has
been lobbied for legal protection due its population decline, from hunting and power lines and lights in the former dark and
unlit zones of the island.
The Azores, a group of islands in the north
Atlantic, is a sovereignty to the country of Portugal (Europe), yet with its own autonomous government.

My thanks to the talents of Sol
Baixo, folk group, and older voices from our island for their melodic sounds which fill my soul of sweet nostalgia
