The Atherton Corridor

The Atherton Ditch Adjacent Neighborhood Association was founded by Daryl Supernaw in 2007 with a mission to have the ditch covered in a sustainable manner and, once completed, change the name to the Atherton Corridor Neighborhood Association.

Mission accomplished!

The Atherton Ditch

For 54 years, an open concrete culvert ran along the north side of Atherton Street from just east of the CSULB Pyramid to the Los Cerritos Channel.  In 2008, a $3 million construction project was started to replace the ditch with an underground pipe and a green belt.

Below are before and after photos of Phase 1 of the construction project (Knoxville to Hackett) that was completed in just six months.

Construction Phase 2

Construction began on Phase 2 in September 2009.  This phase included extending the underground storm pipe west from Hackett Ave. to McNab Ave.  The ditch from Palo Verde to McNab was then replaced by a green belt.  All construction was completed on April 15, 2010.

See the Phase 2 page for the construction chronology.
