The Atherton Ditch

For 54 years, an open concrete culvert ran along the north side of Atherton Street from just east of the CSULB Pyramid to the Los Cerritos Channel.  In 2008, a $3 million construction project was started to replace the ditch with an underground pipe and a green belt.

Below are before and after photos of Phase 1 of the construction project (Knoxville to Hackett) that was completed in just six months.

Construction Phase 2

Construction began on Phase 2 in September 2009.  This phase will include extending the underground storm pipe west from Hackett Ave. to McNab Ave.  The ditch from Palo Verde to McNab will then be replaced by a green belt.  All construction is scheduled to be completed by January 2010.

See the Phase 2 page for ongoing construction updates.
