| CAT # | TITLE | COMPOSER(S) | COST |
|---|---|---|---|
| BBP-001 | Amazing Grace | Traditional/arr. by Mark MacKinnon | $12.00 |
| Inspired by the PBS/Bill Moyers special, this arrangement explores several variations in style. First, the horn leads a low-brass trio in a richly harmonic, hymn-like version. Next, trumpet 1 shines in a bluesy "Ray Charles" treatment, with plunger and flutter-tongue effects. Finally, trumpet 2 leads a rousing Dixieland rendition, featuring a tuba solo that is a real show-stopper NOTE: piccolo trumpet recommended for optimal "clarinet" effect on the Dixieland chorus!! | |||
| BBP-002 | Ave Verum Corpus | W. A. MOZART/trans. by Mark MacKinnon | $7.00 |
| One of Mozart's most beautiful choral works, transcribed effectively for brass. Simple but elegant!! This piece is appropriate for church services, wedding ceremonies, concerts - is Mozart ever inappropriate? | |||
| BBP-003 | Ave Maria | Franz SCHUBERT/trans. by Mark MacKinnon | $12.00 |
| An absolute essential for wedding ceremonies. The first chorus features solo horn with muted trumpets on the arpeggios and trombone and tuba providing the bass. After a key change, trumpet 2 solos while trumpet 1 plays a lovely obligato and horn and trombone provide the arpeggios. (Sorry tuba; you're stuck on the bass line. You'll just have to order this and Amazing Grace for that great tuba solo!!) | |||
| BBP-004 | Panis Angelicus | Cesar FRANCK/trans. by Mark MacKinnon | $8.00 |
| Another beautiful sacred work, perfect for church services or weddings. At least one melodic opportunity for each instrument, including several duets. Of note is the verse with trombone & tuba in octaves and the upper 3 voices playing pyramids of bell tones!! Lots of flowing phrases and a dramatic climax. | |||
| BBP-005 | Sleepers, Wake! A Voice Is Calling | J. S. BACH/trans. & ed. by Mark MacKinnon | $10.00 |
| This work claims many authors. The Chorale melody (Wachet Auf) was written by Philipp Nicolai in the late 16th century. Bach gave it 2 different treatments: 1) a text-book harmonization of the chorale, and (2) this version where he weaves a flowing counter melody and moving bass around the simple chorale. In this version, the 2 treatments have been combined, i.e., Bach's own harmonization has been added during some of the chorale entrances. The effect is quite pleasing and adds interest for the performers. NOTE: trumpet 1 has optional piccolo trumpet sections; flugelhorn may be used for trumpet 2. | |||
| BBP-006 | Awake the Trumpet's Lofty Sound | G. F. HANDEL/trans. by Mark MacKinnon | $9.00 |
| Handel's music just seems to have been made to perform on brass, and this chorus from the oratorio Sampson is no exception. As might be expected, the trumpets feature prominently. The melody flows swiftly in the lower 4 voices; sometimes contrapuntally, sometimes in block chords. It is punctuated by rippling fanfares from the trumpets (trumpet 2 does double-duty!!) The overall effect is extremely exciting and can be further enhanced by the optional timpani part. NOTE: euphonium provides a lighter feel on the bottom part, but it can be done on tuba (goes up to middle-C). | |||
| BBP-007 | Airs from the Emerald Isle | Various & Traditional/arr. by Mark MacKinnon | $15.00 |
| Four traditional Irish folk melodies, woven into a medley full of Celtic charm! It starts with The Minstrel-Boy, used in the movie "The Man Who Would Be King". Next is Carolan's Welcome (attributed to the blind harpist, Turlough O'Carolan), When A Man's In Love (a traditional song), and finally a rousing chorus of St. Patrick's Day (Regimental Quick March of the Irish Guards). At least 3 solo opportunities for every player and an optional drum part for the trombone. | |||
| BBP-008 | Quartet from Rigoletto | Giuseppe VERDI/trans. by Mark MacKinnon | $12.00 |
| A beloved and dramatic passage from the opera repertoire, the voice parts are effectively transcribed for the upper 4 brass parts, with excellent tuba support. The opening aria is an "outstanding horn solo" (Cornucopia), and there are lyric passages for both trumpets. Includes humourous synopsis for introductions. | |||
| BBP-009 | Rule, Britannia!-British Patriotic Suite | Various & Traditional/arr. by Mark MacKinnon | $12.00 |
| Nobody does pomp and pageantry like the British, and nothing could be better suited for brass. This suite begins with The British Grenadiers (Regimental Quick March of the Grenadier Guards), slows into Men of Harlech (Regimental Slow March of the Welsh Guards), and concludes with Rule, Britannia! itself. Ample solo opportunities for every player. | |||
| BBP-010 | Little Brown Jug | WINNER/arr. Billy FINEGAN/trans. & ed. MacKinnon | $15.00 |
| A really hot swing tune, one of Glenn Miller's first big hits!! Very active French horn part, reproducing the saxophone licks while the trumpets and trombone weave in and out of hats and the tuba provides a driving bass line. Faithfully transcribed solos for 2nd trumpet, trombone, and horn (originally tenor sax). | |||
| BBP-011 | The James Bond Theme | Monty NORMAN/arr. by Mark MacKinnon | $10.00 |
| A theme recognized the world over, having been used in 19 films spanning 38 years. Captures all the danger, dash, and excitement of 007 himself!! | |||
| BBP-012 | Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer | Johnny MARKS/arr. by Mark MacKinnon | $9.00 |
| A Holiday classic, guaranteed to delight young and old. At least 2 solo or soli passages for each instrument, plus some effects to lend pizazz (trombone laugh, trumpet wah-wahs) and a rousing Dixieland finish. | |||
| BBP-013 | Two Fanfares | R. Strauss & Purcell/trans. by Mark MacKinnon | $9.00 |
| Two short fanfares with different styles. Few passages are as dramatic as the opening of Richard Strauss' Also Sprach Zarathustra, while Henry Purcell's Fanfare in C Major evokes the ceremony of the Elizabethan court. Both can be enhanced by the optional timpani parts. | |||
| BBP-014 | And the Glory of the Lord | G. F. HANDEL/trans. by Mark MacKinnon | $14.00 |
| Handel's music was made to be performed by brass, as this transcription of a gorgeous chorus from The Messiah proves. Sometimes contrapuntal, sometimes in block chords, always a delight for players and audience. A chance for every instrument to shine. | |||
| BBP-015 | Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da | LENNON & McCARTNEY/arr. by Mark MacKinnon | $15.00 |
| A delightful, nonsensical, "feel-good" tune by The Beatles. Light and bouncy with a syncopated melody. Verses, chorus, and release all offer ample opportunities for solos, obbligatos, or counter-melodies for all players. | |||
| BBP-016 | Maxwell's Silver Hammer | LENNON & McCARTNEY/arr. by Mark MacKinnon | $15.00 |
| More whimsy from The Beatles, this time with a funky ragtime feeling. As usual, solo passages for all players abound. Includes trumpet "wah-wahs", cow bell accents and a Dixieland tag chorus!! | |||
| BBP-017 | MacArthur Park | Jimmy WEBB/arr. by Mark MacKinnon | $16.00 |
| A tour-de-force for brass, with rich harmonic textures, dynamic rhythmic patterns, and solo passages for every instrument. A power-house introduction leads into the initial verse and chorus section, featuring solos from the trombone, French horn, and both trumpets. Next comes an interlude featuring French horn and trumpet 2 with an (optional piccolo) trumpet 1 obbligato. This leads into a slow release featuring tuba, trumpet 2, and French horn. A repeat of the introduction prefaces a double-tempo tutti section of powerful, syncopated rhythms which climaxes in a spectacular return to the chorus, featuring trombone and a pyrotechnic display by trumpet 1. Combines the best features of the original vocal version with Maynard Ferguson's big-band version (scaled down a bit for "mortal" chops!!). | |||
