DIRECTIONS

FROM POINTS NORTH:

Get to the junction of I-195 & Rte. 24 in Fall River, MA by one of the following methods:

  1. Rte. 128 (I-95) to Rte. 24 south
  2. Rte. 3 (I-93) to Rte. 24 south
  3. I-495 to Rte. 24 south
  4. Your favorite method
Take the West split towards Providence at this point, but stay in the right lane because you'll take the next exit (< 1 mile) to continue south on Rte. 24.  Continue at POINT A

FROM THE EAST:

Take I-195 west to the junction of Rte. 24 south in Fall River, MA.  Continue at POINT A

FROM THE NORTH-WEST:

Two choices:

  1. Take I-195 east from Providence to the junction of Rte. 24 south in Fall River, MA.  Continue at POINT A.
  2. Alternatively, take either Rte. 114 or Rte. 136 off of I-195 before getting to Fall River.  Follow through Barrington, RI (114) or Swansea, MA (136), then Warren and Bristol, RI until 136 merges with 114 which crosses the Mt. Hope Bridge into Portsmouth.  Continue at POINT B.

FROM THE SOUTH-WEST:

Get to Rte. 138 in North Kingstown, RI by one of the following methods:

  1. I-95 north from CT
  2. U.S. 1 or 1a north
  3. I-95 south to Rte. 4 south from the Providence vicinity
  4. Your favorite method
Take Rte. 138 east across the Jamestown and Newport Bridges ($2 toll on the latter) to Newport, RI.  DO NOT take the exit just off the bridge for "Historic Downtown Newport"; follow the signs for Rte. 138 east, Cape Cod, etc.  The road ends in about a half mile at a ramp that curves around to the right and Ts at a light facing Newport Grand Jai-Alai.  Turn left at this light. At the 2nd light, turn left again; you're still following Rte. 138 east (or north).  One mile from here (1st light except maybe a blinking one), you have a choice: Rte. 138 bears right, while Rte. 114 goes straight ahead.  My road is off Rte. 114, but this is a much more congested approach: all strip malls, lights, etc.  I recommend taking Rte. 138.  Even here, there'll be 4 lights in the 1st half mile, but then they'll thin out and it will be a pleasant ride/drive through scenic, residential territory.

Follow Rte. 138 for 7.4 miles.  At this point, you'll be at the bottom of a rather large hill having just passed a Shell Gas Station, Bank (maybe still under construction) and Clement's Market on the right.  You'll be at a light at a Y fork with a CVS on the left and a Bank in the middle.  Take the left fork here (Rte. 138 follows the right fork).  After 1.1 miles, shortly after passing under Rte. 24, you'll come to another light with a restaurant, "Corner Cuisine" on the far right corner.  Going straight through will put you on Rte. 114 which joins from the left here.  Mitchell Road will be on the left 0.9 miles after this light.  The street is narrow and obscure until you're right on top of it; watch on the right for a blue sign w/ white and yellow lettering for "Barbara's Wig & Beauty Salon" - Mitchell is almost opposite this.  Continue at GROUND ZERO

POINT A:  Take (or continue on) Rte. 24 south.  After 2 miles, you'll cross into RI; after another 5.6 miles, you'll cross a small bridge (possibly under construction) onto Aquidneck Island.  Take the 2nd exit after the bridge (2.1 miles Exit #2, "Portsmouth, Bristol").  At end of ramp, go right towards Bristol and the Mt. Hope Bridge.  After .4 miles, you come to 1st traffic light facing entrance to Mt. Hope Bridge (road bends to right just before light).  At this point, you want to make a logical LEFT turn, but it is illegal, so you turn RIGHT, then take an immediate left onto an access road which does a 180 degree turn under the 1st arch of the bridge and brings you back to the same light facing the opposite direction.  You're now at POINT B.

POINT B:  Turn RIGHT (or bear right if you crossed the bridge) onto Rte. 114 south (towards Newport).  Watch your odometer; Mitchell Road is .4 miles on the right - the street is narrow and obscure until you're right on top of it; watch on the left for a blue sign w/ white and yellow lettering for "Barbara's Wig & Beauty Salon" - Mitchell is almost opposite this.

GROUND ZERO:  #32 is the 1st house on the left not counting the one on the corner; since there are only 2 other houses on the street you can't get too lost!  The "driveway" (cobblestones and grass) is on the downhill (water) side of the house.

PARKING:  If coming by cage, please park on the sides of the road, either up-hill or down-hill from the (relatively) level driveway, which will be reserved for bikes - some folks have a hard enough time keeping parked bikes upright without making them cope with a hill :-).  Also, do not park directly opposite the driveway, nor too close to it on the up-hill side to allow bikes turning room.  And please: be considerate of the neighbors' lawns!
