Baby Buddha
753 Washington St at Bethune St (627-8131). Subway: A,
C, E to 14th St. Noon–midnight.
The decor is a little stark, but outside Chinatown,
this is one of the few places you'll find departures
from the standard General-Tso's-chicken-and-Moo-Shu-pork
format (although they do those well, too). Several
appetizers are delightful—the scallion and basil
pancakes pack the same carbo punch as a good mashed
potato. Vegetarians should note the menu's open-ended
offer to cook up the finest (and weirdest) of the
day's market offerings from Chinatown.—Susan Kelly

Baby Buddha
753 Washington Ave at Bethune St (627-8131). Subway: A, C, E to 14th St; L to Eighth Ave. Mon–Fri 11:30am–11:30pm; Sat, Sun noon–11:30pm. No delivery minimum.
On a rather deserted corner in the West Village, just a few blocks down from Hogs & Heifers, this tranquil little spot serves remarkably good Chinese. On weekdays, treat yourself to one of 16 lunch specials ($3.95–$4.95), which include an appetizing stewed chicken (chunks of tender chicken meat cooked in a sweet soy saucey–tasting seasoning with anise seeds). The vegetable dumplings are beautifully made and filled with veggies you can see; entrées such as the spicy glazed shrimp offer delicious alternatives to the standards like lemon chicken, which are also good. In warm weather, eat at the cozy outdoor tables.
