MYRTLE BEACH

SOUTH CAROLINA

September 1999

Despite having to delay our planned departure due to Hurricane Floyd and after being assured that Myrtle Beach was open and there was no major storm damage, we decided to head south. We have also changed our travel habits and are now intending to choose a destination campground and to use a rental car to explore the surrounding area; this should make for more relaxing vacations. Enterprise Rent-A-Car has become our favorite, competitive prices, clean dependable vehicles and not only will they pick you up at the campground, but now they will also take you back to the campground when you return the rental.

At the last intersection before entering the interstate, I noticed smoke coming from the brakes. Luckily our dealer was less than a mile away and he quickly determined that the brake pedal assembly had rusted and was not allowing the master cylinder to fully release pressure. Spray lubrication of the exposed pivot points is now routine maintenance.

Broken Wheel CampgroundWeston, West Virginia. This is our second visit and all sites were operational this time.

Today's travel included a stop at Mabry Mill, Virginia. Located in the Blue Ridge Mountains, this working exhibit is an interesting view of Appalachian life, and the Mill is very photogenic. We also visited Mount Airy, North Carolina, the basis for "Mayberry RFD".

Homeplace Recreational ParkArarat, North Carolina. A nice campground but access is difficult via a steep winding road. Luckily another camper gave us directions for an alternate departure route that was easier.

The only storm related problem we encountered was congested traffic entering Myrtle Beach because the Waccamaw River was cresting above the banks and 501 was the only road open to the city, there was very little storm damage to the city or the beach.

Myrtle Beach Travel ParkMyrtle Beach, South Carolina. Beautiful Park with large level sites; shaded or open, with direct access to the beach, and both a heated indoor pool and an outdoor pool with a lazy river ride.

The Carolina OpryMyrtle Beach, South Carolina. This was the most entertaining show we saw, very professional.

The Dixie StampedeMyrtle Beach, South Carolina. Had an entertaining preshow and show with beautiful horses and talented riders; however the meal was average.

Alabama Theater Barefoot LandingMyrtle Beach, South Carolina. The shops and restaurants at the Landing provided an interesting visit prior to the show. However, we were not particularly impressed with the quality of the show.

Brookgreen GardensMurrell's Inlet, South Carolina. Not only provides a look at Plantation life, but also has beautiful gardens and statuary.

Goose Dam CampgroundRocky Mount, Virginia. A small primitive campground.

Carlisle CampgroundCarlisle, Pennsylvania. Large, level sites, convenient to interstate.
