My venture into real-effort weight training began with the type of routine discussed in this article.  It's pretty similar to Randal J. Strossen's book Super Squats.  Don't believe the subtitle of Super Squats, at least if you're a normal person.  Expect great results, but not 30lbs of muscle in 6 weeks.
