The purpose of the Poverty Program and website is: first to educate, publicize social and moral issues and events that impact poverty here at home and in the world; and second, a website for use by the Doyle Center and other service organizations in the area to list their services and their volunteer needs.
Disturbed by the poverty in the world, including the United States and our hometown of Newburyport, a group of people decided to stand up and speak out on the issues that create poverty. The Poverty Program was a year-long education event on a poverty topic, hosted by an area church or organization, with speakers, movie and group discussion. Topics covered in 2007 are Third World poverty, American poverty, education, economic issues, human rights, arms and weapons trade, genocide, and HIV/AIDS (health issues).
Supported initially by Rev. Ross Varney and members of the Belleville Congregational Church, the program became strengthened by other churches participating in the discussion and/or hosting the meetings. Churches involved are the First Religious Society Unitarian, Quaker Church, Salvation Army and Congregation Ahavas Achim.
