Peter Cushing as Elijah Baley Made for television by the BBC.
Starred Peter Cushing as Elijah Baley.

Unfortunately the film prints of The Caves of Steel have long since been junked during the infamous television archive “purge” of the 1970’s, and no copy of the whole play exists in the BBC’s Film and Videotape Library. Several extracts have fortunately survived however, the most notable of these being a 1.20 minute extract from the opening sequence of the play, which was retained on a feature on the BBC’s Radiophonic Workshop (made for an early edition of Tomorrow’s World). This extract features the opening title graphics, and shots from the initial murder scene, within which Dr Sarton is blasted by the unseen figure of Enderby. Short extracts also exist from other scenes from the play, including Baley and Daneel meeting with Dr. Gerrigel, and their later confrontation with the Medievalist ringleader Clousarr. Short clips from some of these sequences were recently seen in the ‘I Robot’ edition of the 1997 BBC documentary series Future Fantastic.

Decent movie starring Robin Williams. Kids seem to like it (despite dark moments) and I would recommend seeing it once just for the heck of it.

FUTURE PROJECTS

Isaac Asimov (IMDB entry) was known as an extremely prolific writer with more than 460 published books and short stories, most of which were science fiction, though he also wrote mysteries and non-fiction, the latter usually dealing with science. However, Asimov was extremely lax in regard to selling his works to other mediums, largely because he was more interested in the work itself than it eventually ending up on television or in the movies. Ironically, that has changed with his death.

Now, over eight years after he died, Asimov has deals all over Hollywood. The change is because the Asimov estate now has different representation — Created and run by Vince Gerardis and Ralph Vicinanza. The duo represent screen rights for about 200 major science fiction, fantasy and horror authors. Vicinanza was also Asimov’s agent late in the writer’s career.

Hollywood is especially interested in Asimov’s work because the film industry has finally figured out that science fiction projects usually sell (as if the success of Star Trek and Star Wars didn’t make that plain), but Asimov’s stories are easier and cheaper to adapt than most. While usually set in the future, Asimov rarely featured aliens and his themes were usually thoughtful and positive.

Twentieth Century Fox has acquired Asimov’s most popular novel series, Foundation. It will be directed by Shekhar Kapur (Elizabeth). With 20 million copies of the first of the seven Foundation novels sold, it qualifies as one of the best-selling science fiction series of all time. Condensing the saga might be difficult however, but Kapur, who describes himself as an avid Asimov fan, believes he can boil down the series that deal with a scientist who mathematically diagrams the future of the human race, until an evil mutant who wants to conquer the universe interferes.

Attempts have been made to adapt the series before, but Fox has found a helmer in Kapur who believes the sprawling tale can be boiled down into a feature film.

“I’ve been an avid reader of Asimov since I was a child and always dreamed of making the great science-fiction film and only recently wondered why nobody has made a film of ‘Foundation,’” said Kapur.

The director turns the evil conqueror into an antihero, who fights his own destiny to become a “prophet of love.”

The Caves of Steel
NO PICTURE

Warner Brothers has put another of Asimov's stories into development: The Caves of Steel.
The novel deals with Earth in Asimov’s future, where some humans have gone to colonize the stars and invented sentient robots to come along with them. Those left on Earth don't particularly enjoy the company of Spacers or robots. Elijah Baley, a New York police detective, is forced to deal with both when a big-shot Spacer is murdered and he’s sent into space with his new partner, a robot. Unfortunately, not only was the robot a robot, he also looked and sounded just like the guy who died. Good book, and lots of movie potential.

Rumors have it the WB just got started, so don’t expect it any time in the near future. On a worrying note, Simon West, director of Con Air, The General’s Daughter and Tomb Raider, is apparently attached to the project. That’s not exactly an encouraging sign, but he’s also announced The Prisoner film, so maybe he’s mellowed a bit, and no longer has an urge to throw in explosions every three minutes. We hope.
