The Lotus Children's Centre was started in 1995 by an Australian kindergarten and yoga teacher, Didi
Kalika. Today the Centre provides for education and housing to approximately 128 Mongolian children. Children at the
Lotus come from backgrounds of abandonment, malnutrition, sexual abuse and domestic violence. A baby boy just a few
weeks old was found on a park bench. A mother who had been living in a doorway with two children, gave birth to another
and took him to the Lotus because she knew she couldn't care for him.
Housing consists of basic Mongolian housing (gers) for the Centre’s small family groups that are comprised
of 7 to 8 children and one housemother. The Centre also ensures that the children receive quality education and
has established a school for grades kindergarten, first and second, with plans to expand. The Lotus Centre also works with
poor families to help the family stay together instead of giving up the children they can not afford to look after.
