WHAT NEED’S TO BE SAID
This week
our nation celebrates our independence. The fourth of July is a special day and
one that should be honored. We still have a great country and are living in very
prosperous times. Will we continue in our abundance or is there change on the
horizon?
I
recently watched the movie “Gandhi” about India’s great leader. When
Gandhi came from South Africa back to India he was told to travel through the nation and see what needs to be said. We need to look at our nation today and see what needs to be said.
One of
the things I would suggest is “Where is God?” I see a lot of church
buildings and hear a lot of people claiming to be religious but I do not see them serving and praising God and living the
pattern of life that would please Him. Our nation was once proud of our relationship
with the one true God. I must question if that is still the case in America today. Where is God in your life? Where is God
in America today?
A
second thing that needs to be said is to “get out of the garbage.” My
mother grew up in poverty in the thirties and forties in Northwest Alabama. She
has said that she did not know she was in poverty because everyone they knew, were in the same situation. Years later when success came to my family I can still remember my mother taking all her children to the
garbage dump and showing us just what people threw away. The things thrown away
would have been treasures to her family when she was growing up.
I can remember
walking through those open landfills and watching where we stepped, and covering our noses to avoid the stench of all the
rotting materials. Today we live in garbage dumps and allow the garbage in our
homes. We read materials and watch programs on our televisions and computers
that are nothing but pure garbage. Our daily newspapers often contain garbage
not fit for consumption. Would you invite Jesus into your home and share an evening of television with him? Let us do something with the garbage in our society.
The
third statement I think needs to be said is that “we can make a difference.”
We are often disillusioned to the point that we feel there is nothing we can do.
It is just not worth the effort to try and make a difference, but we can and we should try. It is much easier to set in my recliner with my laptop and remote control than go to a meeting or work
in someone’s life where I might make a difference.
If
we are to truly change the direction of our country we must individually change ourselves.
We must get involved with the issues that are destroying the basic framework of our nation. We must stand up and make a difference because the garbage people surely are. Will you commit to making a difference in our society beginning this very day?
