Literacy Volunteers of Washington County, Inc. fosters and promotes adult literacy in southeastern
Connecticut and southwestern Rhode Island. Through free programs, instructional volunteers bring permanent
change to the lives of participants, their families, and our communities. Some participants are learning English
as a second language, and others are native speakers of English who need improved English language skills. Some are
dislocated workers, and most are among the 7,291 Washington County adults identified in the 2010 Census
as not having a high school diploma. In addition, many of these adults speak a language other than English at home.
Participants work with tutors, small group facilitators, and on research based software in the staffed technology
lab. Web based distance learning with supervision is also available.
Literacy Volunteers of Washington County is an accredited affiliate of ProLiteracy America and is funded in part
by the Rhode Island Department of Education, Adult Education.
