Literacy Volunteers of Washington County, Inc. fosters and promotes adult literacy in southeastern
Connecticut and southwestern Rhode Island. Through free programs, instructional volunteers bring permanent
change to the lives of participants, their families, and our communities. Some participants are learning English
as a second language, and others are among the over 14,000 Washington County adults who reported in the 2000 census
that they lacked a high school diploma. Some are dislocated workers.
Participants work with tutors, small group facilitators, and on research based software in the staffed technology
lab. Web based distance learning with supervision is also available.
Literacy Volunteers of Washington County is an accredited affiliate of ProLiteracy America and is funded in part
by the Rhode Island Department of Education, Adult Education.
