CROP Walk
Once again the third Sunday of October will bring
the annual Church World Service/CROP Walk to our area. Jesus said we would always
have the poor with us (John 12:8), but somehow in suburban America, we never expect them to be quite as close as the Gulf Coast. The truth, of course, is that poverty is everywhere, even in the good old USA. But the Third World images we
saw from the flooded streets of New Orleans lent an immediacy to their plight and a reality to their numbers that far too
many of us for far too long have managed to keep safely locked away from our consciousness.
Well, as always, Church World Service, the disaster and long-term relief agency was one of the first in to help out. This can only happen because of the great annual response to projects like the CROP
Walk, Blanket Sunday, and other ongoing efforts. Walk in the CROP Walk this October
16, starting with registration at 1 pm at Agawam Congregational Church. Or see
the Katrina FAQ page below to find out what else you can do to help. Yes, the
poor will always be with us. But we will always be the hands and feet and voice
of Jesus, called by God to meet them in their suffering. Walk with us.
