Member Spotlights
at Community Presbyterian Church

Brenda Mellon

If you’ve every dropped your kids off for nursery care Sunday morning, you may know who Brenda Mellon is. Brenda, along with Kerry Crilley helps coordinate nursery care at CPCBA, in addition to serving on the Fellowship and Evangelism and Christian Education committees. With her husband, Steve, she’s been a member of the church for almost two years now. Her two children, Chloe, four-and-a-half and Brooke, two-and-a-half, have also made frequent appearances here at Community Church. Their cat, Mr. Knothead, has not shown up at CPCBA yet, as far as we know, but resides with them at their home in Emsworth.

With a B.S. in Occupational Therapy earned at Eastern Kentucky University, Brenda has done work in community mental health, nursing homes, home care, and pediatrics for 15 years. Motherhood has given her spiritual inspiration in devotions for mothers. Perhaps her education and spiritual side are reflected in her involvement in Half the Sky, an organization working to establish infant programs and preschool programs in Chinese orphanages. Chloe and Brooke were both adopted in China, and Brenda is planning to travel to China this month (October) to the city of Chloe’s birth to establish programs in the new orphanage there. Brenda is also works with Care Connection, a group helping to provide meals to families returning from adopting their children.

When relaxing she enjoys reading (she has recently read a book by Gail Tsukiyama, Wild Swans: Three Daughters of China by Jung Chang and Carry Me Home by Diane McWhorter), cross-stitch and rubber stamping, but doesn’t have much time for her pursuits now. And to further show that issues of adoption and childcare are close to Brenda’s heart, when asked for favorite TV shows, in addition to popular fare such as ER and CSI, Brenda mentions Adoption, a show documenting real adoption experiences and currently showing on the Hallmark network. These issues are also reflected in Brenda’s favorite book of the Bible, the story of Ruth. Her favorite hymn is The Lord Came Onto Me. She also enjoys folk and bluegrass music and is a member of the church book club. Brenda has enjoyed vacationing on the Chesapeake Bay and the two cities in China where she and Steve adopted their daughters are close to her heart.

Thank you Brenda for sharing your story with us! If you see Brenda, let her know you enjoyed reading about her. If you would like to volunteer yourself for a spotlight, please e-mail me at houser@nb.net, or call me at 412-732-9599.

Thanks, Susan Houser
