The Pomeroy Library
at Community Presbyterian Church

Mission Statement

The Library of the Community Presbyterian Church of Ben Avon, under the auspices of the Christian Education Committee, was organized on September 19, 1999, for the purpose of providing teaching-learning materials for the fellowship of the church. The library staff may accept funds through the church treasurer and gifts of materials that help to accomplish this purpose. Specific rules or guidelines for operating the library are determined by the Library Committee. The Library staff will consist of co-librarians. The Library Committee will consist of the Pastor, the Director of Christian Education, the Chair of the Christian Education Committee, and the Co-Librarians.

The Pomeroy Library is located upstairs above the entrance to the Fellowship Hall.

Catalogue

The Church is fortunate to have a fine collection of printed materials and audio-visuals in its collection. Posted on the bulletin board above the video cabinet is a "Library Guide" showing the placement of materials in the Library shelves by category. With the help of the "Guide" church members can easily browse according to their interests. A complete printed catalogue is available at the Librarian's desk and as a "read-only" document on the computer where it is possible to search for a particular author or book (audio-visual) title. Instructions for using the computer will be placed by the computer.

Statement of Standards

The Library will be a church resource library related to church activities and will be usable by all ages and church interest groups. The Library will not attempt to server secular purposes as a general lending library since there are many community resources for such material outside the church. The Library will limit its selection of materials, both printed and audio-visual, to those which help our members develop their Christian faith. Donated books which do not fit into these standards will be donated to a local library or maintained in a "borrow or swap library" in the Narthex and will not be catalogued. Mini-libraries may be developed for teaching and activity areas throughout the church in order to ease shelf space in the library. Maintenance of mini-libraries will be the responsibility of the teacher or teacher who sets them up.

Borrowing Policy

The Library will be open whenever the Church is open. Except for "Reference" materials designated by "REF" on the spine labels, anyone may borrow books and video-tapes at any time (for not more than two weeks) by doing the following:

The Accession Policy

The Library Committee has adopted a policy limiting the selection of materials for the library to those which will help our members develop their Christian faith. the policy will permit a broad spectrum of materials but will not permit secular materials without a theological connotation. Space is limited. Duplicate copies will not be kept.

Anyone who wants to give a large number of books (e.g. more than ten books) should provide a list to the committee before moving the books to the library. The committee will select the acceptable books and arrange for their physical delivery. Fewer than ten books may be deposited in the box provided. The Committee will maintain a "wish list" of printed and audio-visual materials for the guidance of donors.
