Nancy Hamilton

"…neither death nor life nor things present or past …will be able to separate you from God’s love." Romans 8:38-39, Nancy Hamilton’s favorite Bible verse. Nancy is the subject of this month’s spotlight. Attentive Spotlight readers will remember that Nancy lives with her husband Chuck – featured in last month’s spotlight -- in Franklin Park and has been married 41 years. She and Chuck have two sons who live out of the Pittsburgh area. David lives in Alexandria, Virginia, and Steven, lives in Eden Prairie, Minnesota with his wife Marilee. Nancy joined CPCBA one and a half years ago.

An active church member in her previous church, in the past Nancy has served as Elder, Clerk of Session, and has served on a pulpit search committee. She is currently serving on the Fellowship and Evangelism committee and is a newly ordained deacon.

Nancy has had an active life. She graduated with a BA in Psychology from Gettysburg College, and raised her sons as a stay-at-home mom for 17 years. She then worked as an aide in the gifted program at North Allegheny Intermediate High School for a number of years. Her greatest accomplishment, other than raising two boys, was to change careers at age 52 and earn her Master’s in Human Resources at La Roche College in 1991and pass the Professional in Human Resources Certification Exam (PHR). She retired from UPMC St. Margaret in April 2000 after 9 ½ years as Employment Coordinator. Still active, since November of 2000 she’s worked on a casual basis at The Medical Center, Beaver, interviewing and representing the hospital at job fairs.

While her children were in grade school, Nancy participated in PTA, Parent Volunteers, North Allegheny Citizen’s Advisory Council and athletic booster groups. In fact, when Pete Candreva (another spotlight subject) was around 4, his mother and Nancy were kindergarten room mothers for Pete’s sister and Nancy’s youngest son. Nancy is currently on the Board of Governor’s at La Roche College and just completed 9 ½ years on the Board of the North Hills Community Outreach.

Nancy lists a number of favorite hymns, including Amazing Grace, Spirit of God, Descend Upon My Heart, and Holy Spirit Flow Through Me. Asked for a prayer she finds meaningful, she says the Prayer of St. Francis of Assisi. Nancy has found a nearness to God in the natural world, amidst the glory of His handiwork. Her favorite vacations have been to the mountains and she’s enjoyed tent camping at beautiful wilderness sites in West Virginia, by a beautiful lake in Massachusetts and at sites in New York. She also displays her joy in nature in one of her favorite hobbies, gardening.

Other hobbies include reading (favorite books are Peace Like a River by Lief Enger and Valley of Decision by Marcia Davenport, a story about a North Side Pittsburgh steel family set in the late 1800’s to Pearl Harbor), listening to classical music, theater, needlepoint and bridge. She enjoys movies that make her feel good - Babe, Sleepless in Seattle, Dave, The Shawshank Redemption, and Castaway. On TV she enjoys a range of shows, from Biography to CSI and the West Wing, and from Masterpiece Theater to Worlds Funniest Animals.

At CPCBA, Nancy enjoys the friendliness, the fellowship, and the sense of family found here. She especially values Brent for his spiritual guidance and friendship. She finds the Sunday church service meaningful and also the small group activities, special events and fellowship dinners.

Thanks Nancy, for sharing some details of your life. If you see Nancy, let her know you enjoyed reading about her. If you would like to volunteer yourself for a spotlight, please e-mail Marty or Susan Houser at houser@nb.net, or call them at 412-732-9599.
