Member Spotlights at Community Presbyterian Church |
Steve Mellon
|
Steve Mellons been getting a lot of press lately, but it is sheer coincidence that he is the subject of this months member spotlight. You may have seen him on the cover of the October 23 edition of the Pittsburgh City Paper, where his recently published book After the Smoke Clears was written up. (The complete article is on the bulletin board in the Narthex.)
Steve resides with his wife Brenda and daughters Chloe and Brook in Emsworth. Theyve been members of CPCBA for almost two years, and Steve enjoys the open-minded and friendly people here, and appreciates that he and Brenda were asked very quickly to get involved in church life. Steve has served on the Fellowship and Evangelism committee and is also serving as deacon his favorite church activity is washing dishes after fellowship hour. "The deacons will understand," he says.
Alert readers may have noticed Steves name on photos in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, where Steve is a staff photographer. With a degree in journalism from Eastern Kentucky University, Steve has pursued a career as a journalist for over 20 years. He was born in Jeffersonville, Indiana.
Steve is an avid reader and haunting used bookstores is a favorite hobby. He especially admires the short stories of Kentucky author Chris Offutt, along with John Steinbeck and sometimes Ernest Hemingway. The last book he read was Truman Capotes In Cold Blood. His favorite movie is John Sayles Matewan an account of the 1920s labor strike in the West Virginia town. The town is one of the subjects of After the Smoke Clears. In contrast to these grim subjects, he lists his favorite tv shows as the perennial classic A Charlie Brown Christmas and the Powerpuff Girls. Musically, Steve is a fan of bluegrass musician Sam Bush and the progressive bluegrass band New Grass Revival.
Spiritually, the role of God in saving his father from self-destruction was a profound influence on Steve. The hymns Rock of Ages and How Great Thou Art are meaningful to him as he remembers singing them every Sunday as he grew up. Because his daughters recite it every night, the Lords Prayer has become his favorite prayer.
Thanks to Steve for sharing some details with us in the member spotlight. Be sure to say hi to him when you see him around the church, and check out the article from the City Paper on the Narthex bulletin board.
