The Male Chorus et af left Baptist Church early Friday
morning on May 15th en route to Buford, Georgia, a suburb of Atlantic. In proximity it's equivalent to the distance between
Baltimore and DC. We were blessed to have a wonderfully skilled Bus Driver and the rides down and back were smooth
as silk.
Our hotel
was a short cab ride from the largest shopping mall on the east coast over 200 plus stores. Also we were located within
walking distance of numerous strip mall shopping centers and restaurants all of which our members took advantage
of.
The trip
included a wonderful tour with a guide that was a “native raised in Atlantic and terrific in sharing information on
the rich heritage of the Atlanta area. We toured downtown Atlanta
which included the Coke Cola Corporation, City Hall, and other historic buildings. We went on a 'Black History Tour to the
King Memorial Center and Museum, the King Visitors Center, the church
and neighborhood where Dr King grew up, historically Black colleges
and universities, various historical neighborhoods of black businesses and current neighborhoods of affluent Black celebrities. We were richly informed of the many famous blacks that either lived or started
their careers in the Atlanta area.
We learned
how the "Underground acquired that name. It seems that after Atlanta
was burned during the civil war, when it was finally restored, the city officials decided to re-build the city at
a higher elevation level with a rapid rail transportation system to give residents better access to the city and suburban
areas. The system is currently known as MARTA. After many years the area was restored to its current "Underground"
look and is well known as a gathering place and for its combination of shopping and eateries.
