Education Through... Body, Mind, and Soul.

Church School

Providing a program for every age group, Prince of Peace Presbyterian Church holds Church School every Sunday morning from 10:00 to 10:45 from September to June.
  • Nursery (babies up to 23 months): Parents can participate as teachers or attend adult classes.
  • Two and Three Year Olds: This class studies the lesson theme at its own age level for four weeks. There is time for play, movement, social interaction and fun woven into the lessons.
  • Four Year Olds to 5th grade:
  • Middle School and Senior High Classes: The POPpeters - the Prince of Peace puppet ministry class - works hard several times during the year to prepare and present a skit for the younger children in the workshops or during worship. When not preparing skits, the Middle School will work on a study of the New Testament entitled "With All Boldness and Freedom." Included in this study will be the opportunity for the class to learn about life in a Biblical village through an interactive, hands-on experience. The Senior Highs will engage in a study of World religions that will include visits to other churches and to churches and museums in the DC area as they also explore Christmas and Christian art. Both groups will also assist with several community and church mission projects along with monthly fellowship activities planned throughout the year.
  • Adult Classes: Prince of Peace adult classes meet throughout the year for short-term studies under a variety of leadership. Classes panned for this year include a study of Presbyterian Beliefs, a course on Presbyterian Polity (or how the church governs itself), "The Gospel According to Harry Potter", The Gospel According to Tolkein", and a video series entitled "Jews and Christians - A Journey of Faith."

  • Children's Worship

During the 11 o’clock worship service, children from kindergarten through 3rd grade may participate in Kids Club. An adult volunteer tells a Biblical story and encourages questions. With age-appropriate activities based on the story, this provides a guided study of the day’s lesson.

    Other Activities

As part of our Christian Education program, many other activities are presented throughout the year:
    • In October, third graders receive age-appropriate Bibles during both Sunday morning worship services.
    • The Prince of Peace youth groups meet for fun, fellowship, service and study throughout the year.
    • The youth groups assist with the school backpack project, the Thanksgiving food basket project, the Christmas Angel tree collection, assisting in preparing and serving meals at Sarah's House (a shelter for abused and homeless women and children in the area), collecting toys and books for Sarah's House and make candy for the holiday food baskets.
    • Each summer, the Senior Highs travel to a remote section of West Virginia to join with other church groups for a week of work camp in an Appalachian community.
    • In cooperation with several other Crofton churches, Prince of Peace offers a week long Vacation Bible School for area children each summer.

    • In addition several special events are presented during the year: Our children will participate in the annual Christmas pageant with our Senior Church Choir; on the Sunday before Ash Wednesday a Pancake Dinner and Mardi Gras celebration is held before the solemn season of Lent; during Holy Week a special dramatic presentation is offered on Maundy Thursday followed by a 36 hour Easter Vigil. This vigil begins on Good Friday and ends early on Easter Sunday. During this vigil a labyrinth is used to allow participants to participate in a self-guided ecumenical "Stations of the Cross" meditative journey. At other times during the year a Classic 7-Circuit labyrinth is available for members of the church and the community to walk twice a month for a closer experience with God. Also planned for November is a spirituality workshops including special experiences on the labyrinth and a December "Festivals of lights" workshop that will explore the three major celebrations on December - Hanukkah, Christmas and Kwanzaa. Please call the church office at 410-721-2313 for information and dates of these and other events.
