Today, Hilleary seized 20 cats that were being housed in a car.  Their owner has been moving and/or homeless for the past two years and did not understand that this was not a safe or healthy situation for her cats.  Many are in very poor body condition.  They will go to court on Thursday, April 24 for the seizure.

A little Terrier that we named Tony was wandering aimlessly in the mountains in West Virginia.  He was scared, skinny and shy and no one could catch him.  Tony was suffering from a broken back leg.  Finally, after several weeks, a great group -- Potomac Highlands Animal Rescue -- was able to trap him and brought him to us.  Tony had his back leg repaired by Dr. Love at the Middleburg Animal Hospital today.  He is still shy but very sweet, cute and very appreciative!

We won the appeal on April 4 and were thrilled with the court rulings:  we were given custody of all 44 dogs, a judgment of $45,000 from expenses we have incurred for the care of these dogs, and the judge ruled that Mr. Settle could not own animals for at least 2 years!  But today we were advised that Mr. Settle has the right to a second appeal, so these poor dogs are on hold again until May 9.  Ugh!

We won the appeal!!!  We got full custody of all of the dogs, won our petition and he's been ordered to pay all of the boarding/ medical/ surgical fees the dogs have incurred -- upwards of $45,000.  On top of that, the court ruled that he is not allowed to own ANY domestic animals.  Read an article about it here

We're thrilled that we get to keep the dogs, spay and neuter them, and give these kids the homes they deserve!

choco.jpgWe're happy to announce that our friend Choco has found a home after spending nine months here at the shelter.  He found a great new family who reports that he adores their other dog and their young son.

pete.jpgOur dear friend Pete also found a wonderful home.  He's going to live with one of our alumni dogs, Moon, also a yellow lab.

tiggerspyrosm.jpgOur resident fat cat brothers Tigger and Spyro went home with MHF staff member Lisa Andrews.  They had been with us for 10 months, enjoying more than their fair share of the kitty kibble around here.  Lisa plans to start their diets ASAP!

Court date set.  We went to circuit court this morning to have the appeal date set for the pending unfit owner case.  Sadly, the case will not be heard until April 3, 2009.

It is a difficult task to not only provide daily care for the 37 puppies (all under 4 months of age) but also to provide daily socialization and TLC for the mom dogs and other adults seized.  The whole MHF staff and many volunteers have really stepped it up to try to make sure that all of the adults and puppies get what they need to have a second chance at life and be able to go out into the community as good canine citizens.

This is a gorgeous group of large breed dogs and many are true sweethearts!  We have started to process applications and have placed a few puppies into temporary foster care homes.  We cannot adopt out any of the dogs at this time but can place some into foster care.  If interested, please fill out and submit an application - that will get the ball rolling!

Yuppie is adopted!  Our dear little office dog Yuppie found his forever home!  Yuppie spent close to a year with us.  He is visually impaired and has a heart murmur but that didn't stop a lovely woman in Hamilton from adopting him.  Yuppie will be groomed regularly and will have a few other little old poodles as friends.

Katie is back!  Katie Beam has worked with us for the past 8 years as an animal caregiver.  Last year she went to vet tech school, graduated and moved away to pursue her career.  But she couldn't stay away for long and we are VERY happy to report that Katie is now back with us and is in charge of all of the medical and behavioral care of our animals and the adoption program!

Welcome to Lisa Andrews!  Lisa started with us as an administrative assistant and volunteer coordinator in November.  She has strong computer skills, is very creative, a hard worker and a true animal lover!
