On Christmas Eve 2008, Hilleary received a call of concern about an emaciated and very pregnant pit bull on a chain. The caller felt that she had not been fed or watered in days and was concerned that she would give birth soon. When Hilleary arrived at the property, she found a VERY pregnant and skinny brindle pit bull on a 3 foot chain. She had no food or water and could not get out of her own waste. The dog also could only back into her dog house- the chain was too short for her to enter the dog house and turn around. (imagine her giving birth in these conditions...) After speaking with the family and having to call 911 to avoid a physical altercation, Hilleary seized the dog and charged the owners with failure to provide adequate care. The dog was directly transferred to an animal emergency hospital where she was diagnosed with 3 types of internal parasites, was anemic, determined to be in poor body condition and had low protein levels. The bottom line is that she was not being cared for. We named her Louise and she gave birth a few days after arriving at the shelter. The case has been continued in Culpeper General Distric Court. Hilleary will present a strong case to ask that MHF be awarded full custody of Louise and her pups and that the owner is ordered to pay restitution for their care. We'll let you know how this turns out.

MHF's very first Rabies Clinic fundraiser was a great success!  We do hope to have more clinics in the future - perhaps on a quarterly basis.  A big thank you to the doctors, volunteers and employees that made this happen!
