For many families, having a chained dog in the backyard is a way of life. They grew up with a chained dog and their
children will most likely do the same. MHF's Chained Dog Assistance Program was developed to improve the quality of life for
dogs that unfortunately live their entire lives, or the vast majority of it chained outdoors. This
program was designed to assist and educate families in improving the living conditions
of their “chained dog”. MHF currently works with many families in
the Fauquier/Culpeper County, Virginia areas. MHF is educating these families on the duties of dog ownership, including
what constitutes a “humane chain” (by law a chain must be a minimum of three times the dog’s body length
from the base of the tail to the tip of the nose) and what is considered adequate food, water and shelter.

MHF has established a program that rescues equines destined for slaughter
or in situations of abuse and/or neglect. MHF rehabilitates each equine and finds homes
for them where they will be cared for properly. These horses most frequently come
from public livestock auctions or cruelty cases. MHF President Hilleary Bogley,
who is a Court-Appointed Humane Investigator in Fauquier County, Virginia, frequently monitors the local auctions to ensure
that laws and regulation concerning the treatment of these animals are obeyed.
MHF's companion animal adoption program finds qualified, permanet
and loving homes for the abused, neglected and "at risk" animals that have been rehabilitated at our shelter.

LOW INCOME SPAY/NEUTER & MEDICAL ASSISTANCE
By preventing unwanted
litters, MHF’s Spay and Neuter Program directly addresses the problem of an overabundance of unwanted animals. MHF offers low-cost spaying/neutering for people who genuinely care about their animal(s)
but are unable to afford the expense of spaying/neutering them.
MHF President Hilleary Bogley is a Court Appointed Humane Investigator
for Fauquier and Culpeper Counties in Virginia. Hilleary volunteers her time and works in conjunction with Fauquier County
Animal Control. This enables the Foundation to pro-actively intervene in situations of abuse or neglect. A large majority
of the animals at our farm shelter have been removed from abusive situations and are given a second chance at life.
PUBLIC AWARENESS &
EDUCATION PROGRAMS
MHF regularly sets up
information booths at numerous local events in order to promote awareness of abuse and neglect toward animals and to educate
the general public on responsible care for animals. Additionally, MHF publishes
a quarterly newsletter. By constructively changing the minds of our children, we can bring about a better
future.

MHF is working to control feral cat populations by performing trap/spay/neuter
and release services. Each cat is also tested for feline AIDS and leukemia. Cats are only rereleased if they are healthy and
it is a safe and responsible environment. Studies have proven this method to be highly effective in compassionately addressing
the problem of feral cat populations.
