Slim's Chance
by: Cathy Moss
He had been brought into the shelter dehydrated and starved,
abandoned at the livestock exchange by his owner when he was refused entry into the sale. The shelter had purchased him for
twenty-five dollars. They decided to call him "Slim."
He had been deemed too skinny, even for the slaughterhouse.
He wouldn't have survived the trip to one of the three rendering plants in the country, located in Texas and Illinois,
and as the veterinarian examined him, he declared the horse probably wouldn't make it through the night.
As I ran my hands over him, feeling loose skin and bones,
he turned to look at me with an inquisitive stare and nickered faintly.
There was something about him, something special, to have
survived to this point, in that condition. As he stood there quietly, dignified really, you couldn't help but wonder. How
could a horse like Slim come to be in a world so blessed as this?
$15 (+$4 shipping). 100% of proceeds from the sale of "Slim's Chance" will go to the Middleburg Humane Humane Foundation's
Equine Rescue Program. Please contact MHF, (540) 364-3272 or mhfdtn@earthlink.net. Books are also for sale at The Shaggy Ram at 3 Washington Street, Middleburg, VA.
