Millie and Red, two of the hounds from the severe starvation case in July (see our Recent Rescues page), found their forever homes!  Millie was near death when we found her in a locked, dark stall, and Red was emaciated on a very short chain with no food or water, but now they've found love with wonderful new families. Dogs from that case who are still with us looking for homes are Karen, Baby, Chief, Tom Bigbee, Josephine, Sammi, Bernie and a litter of Walker Coonhound puppies.

Remember to vote for MHF every day for the Animal Rescue Site Shelter Challenge!  The shelter in the U.S. with the most votes receives a grant of $25,000 which we really need right now.  As of today, we're up to #23!  But you have to vote every day.  Click on "Vote for MHF" on the navigation bar to the left and vote!

Welcome to Stef Perkins, our new spay/neuter coordinator!  Stef was a volunteer at MHF and has a ton of equine experience -- she's a great addition to our team!

Hilleary went to court for the large cruelty case involving the 65 animals yesterday (see our Recent Rescues page), and the man pled guilty -- he was found guilty on 6 counts of criminal animal cruelty and will be going to prison for 3 years for that, on top of the years he received for other unrelated charges.

Welcome to Janel Barton, our newest animal care staff member!

Recently, we helped a woman with 18 dogs who was unable to care for them any longer -- we're taking several at a time, getting them healthy, and finding them homes.

Last Monday, we took in a very emaciated Mastiff who was found on Zulla Road near the tennis club in Middleburg.  As of today, no one has come forward to claim him.  He's a very sweet dog -- we're calling him Andre!

Hilleary and Officer Phillippe (Fauquier County Animal Control) went to court this morning for 3 of the 6 horses seized last week from Goldvein (see Recent Rescues for more details).

The owner released ownership for his 3 horses to MHF, and we go back to court on October 16th for criminal cruelty charges on the other 3 horses (the donkey, the miniature horse, and the standardbred).

A note to our volunteers:  We have so many horses right now that keeping up with the fields is really hard!  Please contact us if you can help "poop scoop" over the next few weeks until we get these guys adopted/fostered.  Even one wheelbarrow-full would be a huge help!!!

Today was the seizure hearing for 50 of the animals seized on July 28th.  The owner released ownership of the animals to MHF and is facing 44 counts of "unfit owner" and 16 counts of "criminal cruelty to animals".  The trial date for that will be set on August 21st.

Please see In the News for articles in the Fauquier Times-Democrat pertaining to this case.

Many thanks to Donna McCain and Karen & Autumn Owens for representing MHF at Wylie Wagg's adoption day in Middleburg.  A lot of interested was garnered in several of our animals, and our friend Snickers found a home through this event!

Also, our volunteer coordinator, Lisa Andrews, would like to thank the following MHF volunteers for training the counselors of the Fairfax Leadership and Resiliency Program, and also for supervising the groups of counselors and teenagers that have come out to interact with the shelter animals:  Tammy Brown, Kathy Durand, Ann Emery, John Kronley, Donna McCain, Martha Munn and Debra Utterback.  Lisa couldn't get it all done without you, and the LRP kids really enjoy their time here thanks to you!

Finally, we're updating the Water Cooler!  It's been very busy at MHF this spring and summer.

The Wingfield Garden Tour on May 10 and 11 went very well, in spite of the sketchy weather.  We raised money for the shelter and several of our animals who attended found homes.  You can see pictures of the tour on our Recent Events page.  Many thanks to Meg Gardner for hosting this event at her gorgeous home!

Our office was closed for a couple weeks while we set up for and then cleaned up after our 14th Annual Black Tie Benefit at Peace & Plenty in Bollingbrook.  The event was spectacular and raised much-needed funds for our organization.  Many thanks to our auction donors, underwriters and volunteers for making this another wonderful event!  Photos of the gala can be found on our Recent Events page.

We're in the middle of cat and kitten season: it typically starts in the spring and runs through summer.  As of today, we have 47 kittens at the shelter, and that's not counting the adult cats we have as well.  Please tell your friends and family who are looking for a cat to visit us or their local county shelter -- every shelter in the area is overrun right now, and is having to euthanize almost all new arrivals.  These kittens need homes!

See our Recent Rescues page to read about some of the animals we've rescued in the last couple of months, and visit our Available Animals page to see everyone else!

Today, Hilleary seized 20 cats that were being housed in a car.  Their owner has been moving and/or homeless for the past two years and did not understand that this was not a safe or healthy situation for her cats.  Many are in very poor body condition.  They will go to court on Thursday, April 24 for the seizure.

A little Terrier that we named Tony was wandering aimlessly in the mountains in West Virginia.  He was scared, skinny and shy and no one could catch him.  Tony was suffering from a broken back leg.  Finally, after several weeks, a great group -- Potomac Highlands Animal Rescue -- was able to trap him and brought him to us.  Tony had his back leg repaired by Dr. Love at the Middleburg Animal Hospital today.  He is still shy but very sweet, cute and very appreciative!
