Volunteer Opportunities

Our animals benefit tremendously from our volunteer's tender loving care. We would love to have you join our team. We realize though, that many people lead very busy lives. Before you sign up for a volunteer orientation and commit to becoming one of our helpers, we’d like to explain the many opportunities at the Middleburg Humane Foundation (MHF) to be sure that you are comfortable and willing to start volunteering. Young adults over the age of sixteen may volunteer without parents. Youth from 5 to 15 must be accompanied at all times by a parent or guardian.

Getting Started

All volunteers must first attend a volunteer orientation.

Space is limited, so call today!

VOLUNTEER ORIENTATIONS

ARE SCHEDULED FOR:

Saturday, August 9, 2008 - 1:00 pm

Please call (540) 364-3272 or email Lisa Andrews, MHF Volunteer Coordinator, to register.

Shelter Opportunities
We have a constant need for enthusiastic, strong helpers to learn our procedures and pitch in where needed. We combine “warm fuzzy” hands-on animal activities with shelter chores each time you volunteer.

TLC Givers - We need help walking the dogs, playing with
the kitties and hanging out with the bunnies. This makes the shelter residents feel good and helps us out a ton!

Shelter Chores - From washing dishes, doing laundry and cleaning cages to scooping poop and pulling weeds.

Drivers Needed
We make frequent weekday trips to several animal hospitals. Drivers are desperately needed in the morning hours between 8:00am to 10am. In the afternoon, we need drivers between the hours of 4:00pm to 6:00pm to transport animals back to the shelter. For further details, please contact our office. Our volunteer drivers don't realize just how much of a difference they make. We are truly grateful for them!

Junior Volunteers
It is very important for children to learn empathy as well as responsible care of animals. Socialization is very important so it is also very helpful to introduce our shelter dogs to little people. Our junior volunteers are a welcome and valuable presence in our shelter!
Help with Fundraisers
We always need extra hands when it comes time for our fundraisers. Sorting through blankets, saddles and tack for our yearly horse blanket and tack sale. Bake sales, t-shirt sales, open houses, book sales,  and the "big one"...the Annual June Black Tie Dinner Dance and Silent Auction. These are among the many different fundraising events MHF hosts in order to bring about much needed money and attention to the countless needy animals in our community. We would not be able to do any of it without the help of our wonderful volunteers.

Orientation Day
Come dressed for the outdoors! Please consider bringing a donation of paper towels, bleach, or plain clay kitty litter to help us care for the animals. We will do a tour of the grounds, meet many animals and hear their stories, review safety rules and procedures and hand out volunteer forms. Expect to be at the
 shelter for 1 to 1 ½ hours.

Volunteering
Once you have completed the orientation and handed in your paperwork, call us with two or more day's notice to start volunteering. We have volunteer hours 6 days a week. Giving one or two hours of your time on the days you volunteer will be a great help. (If more than 90 days have elapsed between your orientation and your first volunteer day, you may need to attend another orientation program.)

Community service hours
Many people, particularly students, find that they need to perform community service hours. We are happy to assist, however, it is generally not possible to volunteer more than a couple hours on a given day. Please plan well ahead of any deadlines and advise us of the need for cumulative hours as well as any written documentation.

The rewards of sharing your time and love with the animals are tremendous. We look forward to having you join our team!!
