Gabrielle
October 12,
2009
MHF received a call about a baby Pit Bull puppy who had two broken
legs- one front and one back. Her name is Gabrielle (Gabby) and she is a blue and white, absolutely adorable and super sweet,
five month old puppy. She had been attacked by a chained dog that she approached and got too close to the dogs food bowl.
The owners took her to their vet and paid for an xray but they did not have any money for antibiotics, pain management or
surgery. Unfortaunetly this little girl spent the weekend without any medications. She came to MHF on Monday and immediately
went to the Veterinary Surgical Referal Practice in Manassas were she was evaluated by Dr. Morris. It was determined that
there was no nerve or growth plate damage so surgery was an option. But, it was an expensive surgery so we had to figure
out if and how we could do this for her. Fortunately the volunteer who trasnported her to Manassas is a wonderful supporter
of MHF and absolutely loves annimals so she made a very generous donation towards the surgery! Gabby did very well but had
difficulty standing and balancing on her two opposite legs so she spent a few extra days at the vet. Then, the volunteer who
picked her up got very attached to her on the way back to the shelter and ended up taking her home to foster! Gabby
has a few tough months ahead of her but we are very happy to have been able to give her a second chance at a happy &
healthy life.

Here Kitty
Kitty
October 4,
2009
Early this Sunday morning Hilleary got a call from Anja, the MHF
Equine Rescue Program Manager. Anja said that there was a cat WAY up high in an old dead weeping willow tree in dsitress.
When Hilleary and her fiance, David arrived, they could hear the cat screaming its head off and yes, he was WAY up in
an old dead tree- this is a problem! David tried to climb the tree but every branch he touch broke easily and fell to the
ground. We then thought to call Scott Jonhston of Johnston Tree Care in The Plains and Scott was there in minutes! Scott put
on his climbing gear and soared to the top quite quickly! The cat was very apprecaitive and was reaching out to Scott. Scott
placed the kitty into a pillow case and stuffed him into his shirt and they safely came down together. Scott handed the cat
off to Hilleary and off they went to the MHF shelter. The following morning, Anja woke up to a screaming kitten outside her
doorstep. She brought that little one to us and as she returned to her house, a neighbor informed her that they had company
visiting from Indiana who had left these two cats behind. They simpy left them loose in the neighborhood and left Virginia.
These two cats got very lucky but many others don't. It never ceases to amaze us at the ignorance and thoughtlessness of people.....

Sampson's Story
September 26,
2009
This is a super sad story.... Sampson, an eleven year old purebred
American bulldog is a victim of a nasty divorce. His family split up so he was placed into a boarding kennel where he spent
the next three YEARS in a four by eight foot kennel. The family stoppped paying the bill so a friend of someone at the kennel
called MHF to see if we would take Sampson. When they brought Sampson to us, he was despondant and had a major head tilt.
After a visit to the veterinarian, it was determined that Sampson has an old broken jaw and a ruptured ear drum. Who knows
when and what happened to this kind old soul. Sampson is starting to come around. He gave kisses last week and is now wagging
his tail and enjoying walks from the volunteers. We hope to find him a loving home where he can spend his golden years well
loved.

Princess, Poet
& Rusty's Rescue
August 29, 2009
Fauquier County Animal Control asked Hilleary to assist with a small
group of horses that were being housed in poor pasture and in pretty poor shape. These three ponies had been chronically starved.
The woman was in total denial and truly could not see the big picture. But with the threat of being prosecuted, she willfully
released the three ponies to Middleburg Humane. All three are now doing beautifully and have gained a ton of weight in the
short time they have been with us. Princess, the Arabian mare is now in foster care where we hope she will be permanently
adopted but Poet & Rusty are still looking for new forever homes.

Cat House Rescue
August 13, 2009
MHF received a call of concern from the neighbor
of a woman who had a ton of cats and had totally lost control. The house was a mess- cat feces and garbage everywhere. The
woman was elderly and truly loved her cats but needed some assistance to reduce the numbers and get her house back under control.
MHF and Fauquier Animal Control spent a week trapping cats. The neighbors got involved and completely cleared out the house
and spent two weeks pulling out and replacing floors and painting the walls. A lot of her belongings had to be thrown
out but, they did a terrific job and she was very apprecaitive. Six cats were vaccinated, spayed/ neutered and thoroughly
vetted before being returned and now everyone will live happily ever after.

Dino
the Dinosaur Dog
August 8, 2009
David,
the fiance of our founder Hilleary, has a place in Culpeper county that he only visits on occasion. David went there
on August 8th to pick up some tools and as he entered his old mill building, he saw a pitiful little hairless dog laying on
an old tarp. He scooped him up and brought him right to the MHF shelter where he received immediate medical care. No
one claimed this little guy so we named him Dino (since he looked like a Poodlesaurus Rex!) He has responded beautifully to
basic mange and skin infection treatment and he will be looking for a new home soon!

Culpeper
County Starving Horses
May 19,2009
On
May 19, 2009 MHF assisted Culpeper County Animal Control, with the removal of 9 horses from a property in Boston Virginia.
This group had been under the observation of animal control for over a year- after many attempts and notices, the owner simpy
would NOT feed them on a regular basis so the horses needed to be seized and removed. Their owner was charged with
9 counts of criminal cruelty to animals. A plea agreement was agreed upon and 2 horses were returned to the owner having
3 years of probation, un-announced visits by animal control or Hilleary, a Humane Investigator, the completion of 20 hours
of equine nutrition classes within one year and restitution of $4,000.00 for the care of the horses. We will be sure to watch
the 2 carefully and hope that this owner will become educated on proper horse care!

Junkyard
Dog - Not!
April 7, 2009
MHF
received a call from another shelter who had taken in an emaciated/ terrified young Doberman Pinscher that had been brought
into their shelter by his owner. The owner drug the dog through the parking lot and up the steps and gave him up because
he was "worthless". The staff had heard him mention that he still had the brother dog so they wanted Hilleary to
look into the situation as a Humane Investigator. We found the brother dog behind a used car lot. He was with a
big tough intact male dog that was totally dominating and bullying him. There was only one dog house, one bowl of food
and one water bowl so- this poor Dobie was hungry, scared and had no shelter. After much discussion, the owner willfully released
the dog to MHF! His name is Harley and he is 8 months old and very special. We hope to to place Harley very soon!

A
Happy St. Patty's Day!
March 17, 2009
This
adorable 5 week old puppy was rescued by the U.S. Postal Service when he was found on the side of the road of John
Marshall Highway. Luck was on his side that day, so we quickly decided to name him Patrick! Unsure of his exact
breed, we found pictures that tell us he may be a Corgi. Like a true Corgi, he is very independent and very sure of
himself! (Patrick was adopted on April 18th!)

MHF
to the Rescue!
March 11, 2009
On
Wednesday March 11th, 2009, Middleburg Humane received a tip that there was a large group of horses at the local livestock
sale barn that were being transported for slaughter and had been involved in a trailer accident. Hilleary Bogley, MHF President
and a Humane Investigator, along with MHF staff quickly responded and found 16 horses that had various injuries from the accident.
A veterinarian was called in and it was determined that 4 of the horses were in need of emergency veterinary care and not
suitable for commercial transport. Fortunately the owner gave these 4 horses to MHF– boy was this their lucky day! All
four were transported to the shelter where wound care, baths and medications
were started. Sadly we lost one the following morning– he had so many lacerations and muscle damage that his body shut
down. The other three are doing well but it will take weeks of daily care and lots of donations to get them healthy and available
for adoption. All donations are GREATLY appreciated and very much needed–
Thank you so much for helping us help
them…

Roo to the Rescue!
February 23, 2009
Dr. Roo Makosky, an old friend and fabulous veterinarian, was working at
the Valley Emergency Veterinary Clinic in Winchester when these two pathetic dogs were brought in by a lovely family
who had found them on the side of a country road in West Virginia. They were emaciated and freezing cold. Bloodwork and a
good physical exam indicated that they had no disease processes that would cause this horrendous body condition- they were
simply starving. Now named Bingo and Peewee, these happy and very lucky dogs are rehabbing at the MHF farm shelter with plenty
of yummy food, hugs and all the care they need to blossom into gorgoeus and loving Labradors. The family who found them has
shown interest in adopting them once they have a clean bill of health!

A HAPPY HOLIDAY RESCUE!
February 19, 2009
Louise & her pups were seized on Christmas eve, 2008. (See Water Cooler posting from Jan.
15) We are vey happy to report that we won our case in Culpeper County General District Court! Both defendants were found
guilty of deprivation of adequte care of a companion animal and were fined $100 each as well as court costs. MHF was awarded
full custody of the mother dog and her puppies with an agreement that there will be no appeal. MHF will not receive
any restitution for the costs of caring for and housing this group so we will not receive any of the $1500 in care costs but,
we are thrilled to have stopped this horrific cycle of suffering and give this group an opportunity at a healthy and happy
life. The puppies and mom are now available for adoption!

Left Out in the Cold
January 14, 2009
At 10:30pm our neighbor's daughter drove by the MHF shelter and noticed a small carrier and
some supplies by the gate. She drove past and then thought- I sure hope there are no animals in that crate- it was
a very cold night- only in the 20s. So fortunately, she came back to take a look. Sadly she
found that someone had abandoned 2 Jack Russell Terriers. They were terrified and freezing cold. The neighbors
took them home and kept them warm overnight until the shelter opened the next day. These 2 little dogs are very shy and scared.
The younger little boy is very thin. Right now, we are being very quiet and not asking anything of them. They
need time to trust us and we hope to be able to place them into a forever home where they will never be abandoned again.
A great BIG thank you to our wonderful neighbors - it was very nice of them to go out of their way to help these little guys
out!

Charlie is Flying High!
January 6, 2009
A lovely man who works at Dulles Airport called us because he found a little skinny kitten on
a runway at the airport. There are secure fences all around so it is a mystery how this little guy got there! The man looked
everywhere for siblings or a mom cat but he found nothing. He and his co-workers named the little kitten Charlie since he
was found in the middle of tarmac Charlie- a term used over the radio at the airport! Charlie is a gogeous 12 week old
long haired kitten who is slowly starting to warm up to his new friends at MHF. Come meet Charlie sometime, he would love
to find his forever home soon!
