Living The Questions

"Wisdom is asking the questions for which there are no answers."
Harrell Beck

In my second pastorate I had a conversation with a young couple who had been attending the church for six months and had finally come to the decision that they needed to go elsewhere. The woman said to me, "I come away from worship with more questions than answers." Then she paused briefly and said, "Well, I guess that's the way Jesus taught, didn't he?" While I lamented seeing this couple leave our faith community, I was glad that she understood one of the fundamental characteristics of the community - we were a congregation of seekers who were committed to asking questions of our faith and often times living without sure answers.

Recently I ordered some brand new (available Feb 1) small group study materials to use during Lent in the Adult Forum and the mid-week Wednesday evening gathering. The material called "Living the Questions" is introduced in the overview in this way.

People know that at its core, Christianity has something good to offer
the human race. At the same time, many have a sense that they are
alone in being a 'thinking' Christian and that 'salvaging' Christianity
is a hopeless task. What is needed is a safe environment where people
have permission to ask the questions they've always wanted to ask but
have been afraid to voice for fear of being thought a heretic.

Living the Questions is ….a small group study exploring beyond the
traditions and rote theologies in which so many people and local
churches seem to be stuck. Ideal for Christian invitation, initiation and
spiritual formation, Living the Questions will help seekers and 'church
alumni' alike in discovering the significance of Christianity in the
21st Century and what a meaningful faith can look like in today's world.

The study is designed for a weekly gathering around a shared meal, video presentation and discussion, spiritual exercises and Bible study. We will be using these materials February 13, 20, 27, March 6, 13, & 20 in the Adult Forum and on Wednesday evenings, February 9, 16, 23, March 2, 16, & 23. A simple meal will be served from 5:30-6:00 pm. followed by children's activities for K-8th graders 6:15-7:30 pm. and the adult study from 6:30-7:30 pm.

Our worship will also explore the "Living the Questions" theme as we look at several gospel stories where Jesus is confronted with questions of faith posed by the ordinary people he meets in his ministry and the religious leaders of his day. This year Lent is a time for questions of faith, so get yours ready.

Living the questions,

Bonnie
