Season of Peace

This year I find myself wrestling with the Advent texts from the prophet Isaiah. They paint a picture of a world at peace - swords are beaten into plowshares, spears into pruning hooks, nations no longer learn war, wolves and lambs, leopards and kids, calves and lions, all live together.

These advent texts call for a Season of Peace when there seems to be little peace in the world around us. Our world is much like that of the prophet Isaiah - violent and chaotic.
Still Isaiah held on to the vision of God's realm of peace and proclaimed it boldly.

Perhaps that is our task this Advent - to proclaim God's vision of peace in the midst of war, broken families, death, unemployment, poverty, disease and a divided nation…. We are not to deny, or ignore, or gloss over the pain and despair of our world. But we are called to hold up God's vision of peace as the alternative for which we live, and work, and hope.

Andrea Adams, a seventh grade teacher from Lancaster County who delights in the beauty of creation, the mystery of creativity, and the worship of her Creator, penned an Advent prayer that describes my hope and longing in this Season of Peace.

Sacred Fire by Andrea Adams

Holy God,

We long for peace,

somewhere,

somehow.

Breathe on the smoldering embers of our wishful longings
that Your holy breath may rekindle our faith.
Ignite our distant desires
with the here-and-now power of Your possibilities.
Stir up the fire of our convictions
with a gritty, love-driven determination
that transforms us from wistful peace lovers
to roll-up-our-sleeves peace makers.
Set us ablaze with faithful passion for this world
that your flame in us may light the way
as we seek to walk the path of peace.
Is it not for this vision and for this way that a tiny babe was born in Bethlehem?
O come, once more, baby Jesus, show us God's way of peace.

Hoping for and preaching peace,
