Brief History of the Lutheran Mission Society
The Lutheran Mission Society is a Christian Health-and-Welfare organization that was established in 1905. Originally formed to assist immigrants coming throught the port of Baltimore, the ministry has changed over the years to meet people's changing needs. Although the forms of physical help offered may continue to evolve, the spiritual help has remained constant -- sharing God's love for all people through the Good News of Jesus Christ.
Today the ministries of the Lutheran Mission Society feature:
- a network of eight Compassion Centers helping those in need with food, clothing and personal care items. A limited number of prescription eyeglass vouchers are also available;
- the Compassion Care Program and Shelters for women and their children;
- LMS Disaster Relief; and
- the LMS Compassion Housing program.
