HEARING LOSS / AUDIOLOGY
Hearing loss
Hearing loss is divided in two categories. A conductive hearing loss results from
difficulty with sound waves being conducted through the outer or middle ear. This may be
caused by wax blocking the ear canal, a perforation in the ear drum, fluid in the middle
ear space, or a problem with the three bones (ossicular chain) that connect the eardrum to
the inner ear. Conductive hearing loss is usually treated medically. (See
Cerumen, Tympanoplasty, Otitis media, Otosclerosis.) A sensorineural hearing loss results
from damage to the inner ear, or the auditory nerve. In the past this was often incorrectly
referred to as nerve deafness. Usually the damage is in the cochlear, or inner ear, rather
than along the auditory (8th ) nerve. Sensorineural hearing loss is usually
treated with a hearing aid. The recent introduction of programable/ digital hearing aids
has helped to resolve many of the problems associated with hearing aids in the past.

Hearing Aids: Hearing aids come in a variety of styles and circuit types. All hearing aids
require an impression of the ear to be made either into an ear mold or into a custom aid
to fit your ear.
- BTE- A behind the ear (BTE) aid sits behind the ear
and is connected to the ear through an ear mold which sits in the concha or bowel of the
ear.
- ITE- An In the Ear (ITE) or custom aid sits in the
ear like an ear mold but all of the electronics are housed within the shell of the aid.
- ITC- An In the Canal (ITC) is similar to the ITE but
only fills about ½ the concha.
- CIC- A Completely in the canal
(CIC) aid is the
smallest hearing aid currently available.
Additional services include:
- Repair and service on all hearing aids.
- Assistive devices for use with telephone / TV etc.
- Battery Sales
