Frequently Asked Questions about Heirloom Teddy Bears

  • Q.  How much fur do you need to make a teddy bear?
    A.  That depends on the size of the bear, bunny or cat you want.  A fur stole will make two 10" bears or one 15" bear with straight legs if all of the fur is usable.  Sometimes portions of a coat cannot be used because of the condition of the fur, or the placement of buttons and pockets.  A jacket will make two 15" bears, or three smaller ones.  You can get as many as seven 11" teddy bears from a full length coat.  Once a coat is received, you will be telephoned to confirm that what you want done can actually be done.

  • Q.  Can you work with all furs?
    A.  Just about any type of fur can be made into a teddy bear.  First it is based on the condition of the fur.  A fur not well cared for may have dry spots and/or tear easily.  Some furs are more challenging to work with and there is an additional charge.  Furs with an additional charge of  $25 are fox, coyote, raccoon, Mongolian lamb and beaver.  Mouton carries an additional charge of $50 because the fur and hide is very thick.

  • Q.  How do you personalize a bear?
    A.  The paws of the bear can be made from the lining of the coat.  Each bear sports a beaded necklace/collar.  If there are monograms in the coat they can be put on a paw (based on the size of the bear) or sewn into the back of the bear.  If grandma wore glasses, so can your bear!  Have you got some sentimental old scarves or jewelry?  These too can be incorporated into the embellishment of your teddy bear.

  • Q.  What do you do with the remnants?
    A.  Remnants can be returned to you if you like.  Simply specify this at the time of the order.

  • Q.  Are there quantity discounts?
    A.  Each bear is made with individual attention and, as such, no one bear is less work than another.  Sorry, there are no quantity discounts.

  • Q.  I don't have a coat.  Can you still make me a bear?
    A.  Yes!  Prices will vary.  I buy only top quality used furs to make the bears, ensuring that your bear will be huggable for many, many years.

  • Q.  How long will it take to make a custom order bear?
    A.  The current turn around time is 6-9 weeks.

  • Q.  What is the return policy?
    A.  Full refunds are provided for bears made with our fur within 10 days of purchase.**
Bears returned for refund must be in new condition and free from all odors.  Deposits on orders from your own fur are non-refundable.  Deposits on bears from Collectible Heirloom Teddy Bears fur are non-refundable if the order is cancelled for any reason prior to delivery.  Once delivered the bear carries a money back guarantee.

  • Q.  Can I send new pelts?
    A.  Heirloom Teddy Bears is in the business of preserving treasured memories from vintage garments but turning them into Heirloom Bears.  As such, I do not work with new pelts, damaged or otherwise.

  • Q.  Do I need to clean the fur first?
    A.  This is not usually necessary, but if your coat smells heavily of smoke or mold, it is recommended.

  • Q.  How will I care for my bear?
    A.  Keep him out of extreme temperatures, and away from smoke, direct sunlight and strong odors.  An occasional vacuum will keep him pretty!

  • Q.  Do you buy fur coats?
    A.  I may be in need of a fur you have.  Please feel free to inquire by email.
