Terrible news
I just found out yesterday that my good friend Joe died of a heart attack this past Friday!  He was only 37, and he had been in fine health.  Joe is the guy that I've been running all my recent marathons with, and I was training to run another one with him in Wyoming in just 4 weeks.  This is devastaing news!

Joe was a runner, and was certainly in good health.  I had heard from him just the day before, and he didn't speak of anything out of the ordinary.  I don't know all the details yet, but I'm sure I'll learn more soon.  I will be leaving shortly for Ohio for his wake and funeral.  I'll be meeting up with other members of our "30s Club" of runners.

I've lost relatives before.  Grandparents, aunt and uncles, etc.  But I don't think I've ever lost a friend in this way before.  Everybody else that I have lost has been old and/or sick.  I've never lost a friend so suddenly.  This is very tragic, and my heart goes out to Joe's family.  What a shock.

Joe is in many of the pictures I have on the Race Reports section of my website.  Please feel free to take a look...

Hail
Wow, we got quite a hailstorm here this evening! I've never seen hail this large. Check out the photo from our backyard.  (Click the pic to see it larger).  I guess it's been a wacky year of weather so far.  The warmest days of the year so far were in April.  We had a couple of 90 degree days then, but it hasn't hit 90 since.  How weird is that?  90 degrees in April, but not in May, June or July?  Wow.  Too bad I was in the middle of mowing the lawn when the storm started, and now we have a funny looking back lawn.  Well, at least I had finished the front yard...

In other news, yesterday was my lovely wife's 30-somethingth birthday.  So Happy Birthday to Maggie!

Running around some more
All I ever do is post about running, eh?  Well, I guess that's all I ever do that's interesting.  So my latest running news?  On Saturday I set a new Personal Best in the 5k, at the Teterboro Airport 5k.  This was the fourth year in a row that I have run this race.  And this time was by far my best of the four, and was my fastest 5k overall.  I finished in 21:16, which is a 24 second improvement over my previous best time.  It also means that I have now set a new PR in every distance so far in 2009 except for the marathon.  This year, I have new PRs at 5k, 4 mile, 5 mile, 20k, and Half Marathon.  But my marathon PR is almost a year and a half old.  I find this strange since the marathon distance is what I base all my training around.  Oh well.

Along those lines, I have registered for another marathon.  This one will be the Run With The Horses Marathon in Green River, Wyoming on Aug 22.  I'm sure I won't get a new PR there, since this one will probably be even harder than Deadwood.  But it should be a fun race, even if it's a slow one.

I have another 5k coming up on Wednesday of this week, in Westfield NJ.  I don't know if I have another PR in me, but that'll be okay.

Welcome to Bob Mann's web page.  I was looking around the internet recently and I thought to myself, "Gee, there aren't enough blogs out there.  What the world really needs is one more idiot throwing his every moronic thought into cyberspace."  And thus this page was born.

Of course, this site is a work in progress, and probably will remain so for quite a while.  Please feel free to poke around as much as you'd like.  And please send me any comments you may have.  Idiots like me who make these sites couldn't possibly make them better without input from idiots like you!
