The Society

The Society was formed in 1977 to encourage the study of Family History, Genealogy and Heraldry, primarily within the County of Bedfordshire.

WHY JOIN A FAMILY HISTORY SOCIETY?

Many family historians join both their local society and one or more societies in the areas where their ancestors lived. You can attend meetings and join in the activities of your local society. The society in the area where your ancestors lived can help you with your research in various ways and help you to contact others who are tracing the same family as you. If you are just starting out you will soon find it is not the case that all research can be done on the internet. It is better to learn how to do it properly and more enjoyable to work with others.

• A journal issued four times a year with interesting articles to help you with your research, provide information on Bedfordshire and keep you up to date with family history.
• A members' pack with useful information to get you started and to explain how we can help.
• Our popular meetings held once a month on a Friday evening at Mark Rutherford School, Wentworth Drive, Putnoe, BEDFORD with good quality speakers.
• A library with over 1,200 books, together with journals published by other societies, available for loan to members at meetings.
• A bookstall with over 350 publications on family history and Bedfordshire, available at meetings or by post.
• A microfiche collection available at meetings and for loan with a reader between meetings.
• Publications making Bedfordshire records more accessible to all.
• Opportunities to get the names you are researching into our journal, on our website and published in other forms to help you make contacts to help your research.
• An index search and printout service plus a research service for members.
• Visits to the Family Records Centre, The National Archives and places of interest.
• An opportunity to help with recording memorial inscriptions or transcribing documents.

Meetings are held at Mark Rutherford School (near Mowsbury Park), Wentworth Drive, Bedford. Visitors or potential members are welcome. Doors open at 7.30 pm and the speaker usually starts around 7.50 pm.
